Reviews Summary

Visitors adore the Ascensor da Bica for its iconic charm and picturesque setting, calling it a quintessential Lisbon experience. While some find the queues long and the ride short, the unique character and photo opportunities, including the graffiti-covered car, are consistently praised. InstagramReddit

"The one star is for the apartment itself and the one worker who came to fix everything.

I arrived in the afternoon and met a family who had been waiting for over 45 minutes to check in. It was their last day and they hoped to check in quickly considering it’s all digital and go out for a nice final day. I walked into a disaster, learning that the kiosk in which guests are expected to check in and get all of the codes was broken. If you aren’t going to pay a worker to regularly be at your location to ensure check ins are smooth and instead decide to save money by using a machine, it’s probably best to make sure the machine is functional.

Upon arrival and learning about the family’s struggle, I called the help number only to be met with a condescending voice who acted like I was stupid for not having read the message directions. I did read the directions. Your directions are unclear and even the digital aspects don’t work.

The man who came to fix the machine and check us in was great. He understood the issue and apologized.

Once I finally arrived to my room, I noticed the wifi did not work at all. I called the number and no one answered. I emailed them and got nothing. Luckily, the same worker was there and fixed it relatively quickly. He should be paid more and the man who answered the phone should perhaps find different employment.

I’d choose a different place to stay based on the fact that you may have to wait hours to check in here. Awful."

"The entrance is directly to the left of The Milkman restaurant. Ring the bell to be let in. This will bring you to the check-in kiosk. They did not allow any early check-ins before 2pm. If you take the elevator to the second floor you will find storage lockers for luggage. You must have a 2 euro coin to use the lockers. The room was clean and location was good. There was no ability to change the temperature of the rooms as it was centrally controlled."

"A very nice hotel with great, friendly and attentive staff. Lovely facilities and balcony view. No complaints. Conveniently located opposite the Benfica football stadium. Metro link into inner city close by, however, it is a few stops away from the heart of Lisbon so great if you prefer a more relaxed stay on the outskirts and don't mind travelling into the main town for restaurants and the like."

A Glimpse into History

The Ascensor da Bica, officially known as the Elevador da Bica, is a historic funicular railway that has been a charming part of Lisbon's transport system since its inauguration on June 28, 1892. Reddit It was designed to overcome the steep incline of Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, connecting the lower district of Rua de São Paulo with the upper Bairro Alto neighborhood. This iconic cable railway is not just a mode of transport but a beloved symbol of the city, offering a nostalgic journey through Lisbon's hilly landscape. Its distinctive yellow cars and the steep, narrow street it traverses make it a quintessential Lisbon experience. TikTok

Unlike many modern transport systems, the Ascensor da Bica retains much of its original charm. The engineering behind it, a counterbalanced system of cars on a steep incline, is a testament to 19th-century ingenuity. Travelers often remark on the unique character of the funicular, especially the car that is sometimes left out overnight and becomes a canvas for local street art. Reddit This blend of historical significance and evolving urban art adds a layer of intrigue to the ride, making it more than just a quick trip up a hill. It’s a journey through time and culture.

When planning your visit, it's important to note that the Ascensor da Bica, like many public works, can undergo maintenance. For instance, it was scheduled for essential repairs in Spring 2025. Instagram This means checking for operational status is crucial to avoid disappointment. Despite these occasional interruptions, the Ascensor da Bica remains a must-do for anyone wanting to experience the authentic spirit of Lisbon, offering stunning views and a memorable ride.

Capturing the Charm: Photography Tips

The Ascensor da Bica is a photographer's dream, offering numerous opportunities for stunning shots. The most iconic view is undoubtedly from the bottom of Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, looking up at the steep incline with the bright yellow funicular cars ascending. TikTok For the best light, aim for the golden hours – early morning or late afternoon – when the sun casts a warm glow on the colorful buildings and the street. This timing also helps in avoiding the harshest midday sun and larger crowds.

Beyond the classic shot, explore different angles. Riding the funicular itself provides unique perspectives from inside the car, looking out at the charming architecture and bustling street life. Instagram Consider capturing the graffiti art that sometimes adorns one of the cars, a distinctive feature mentioned by locals and visitors alike. Reddit The surrounding narrow streets and tiled facades also offer fantastic opportunities for street photography, adding context and atmosphere to your Ascensor da Bica images. Remember to be respectful of other passengers and residents while you capture the magic.

To truly make your photos stand out, experiment with different compositions. Try framing the funicular with the buildings on either side, or capture the movement of the cars. Wide-angle lenses are great for encompassing the entire street, while telephoto lenses can isolate details. Don't forget to look for the laundry hanging from balconies and the local cats that often lounge in the sun – these small details add authenticity to your Lisbon street photography. Instagram
