What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Convento de Santo António Municipal Museum for its remarkably preserved historic architecture and its role as an excellent venue for art exhibitions. The significant temperature drop inside offers a welcome cool escape. However, accessibility is a notable concern due to steps at the entrance and within the building.
"The Convent of Santo António is a remarkable well preserved Convent dating back to 1692.
It withstood the 1755 earthquake, after which it underwent several 18th century additions.
It was closed in 1834, due to the extinction of the religious order.
Later on it reopened as a factory, and even became living quarters as several residences.
In 1984 the Church was restored, and has since then become a Public Property for Cultural events such as Art Exhibitions, and other Cultural functions.
The first thing noticeable is the huge temperature difference! Although it was a very warm (23°C) day outside, at entering, you are immediately in a much cooler environment.
On invitation, we went to view several paintings of a friend of ours, and very much enjoyed the 2025 Visual Arts Exhibition that was displayed from 10 May - 7 June.
Sadly 😔, it's NOT recommendable for wheelchair ♿️ users, as you have to be able to get over the wooden, rather high step, (which is part of the wooden doorway).
And there are also more steps inside.
But for those using a walker-frame, it's accessible, if it's foldable, and you are able to lift it over the step. (see my photo of the doorway).
There is ample free street parking in the direct surroundings of the Convent."

"Really amazing gallery space for art exhibitions. It belongs to the church but it’s being managed by the town hall. Unmissable. Looking forward to the next visit."
