What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Cerdeira Schist Village offers a unique and magical experience with its stunning schist architecture and immersive natural setting, highly praised by families and couples. However, visitors should be aware of potential discomfort during hot summer months due to a lack of AC and be prepared for the challenging drive and walk from parking.
"Your experience can definitely vary as I can see how this could be fun for families or magical or romantic spot but maybe only in Spring or Fall or when temperatures aren't high. In August with high temperatures the whole village was miserable since there is no AC. They provide a fan but it didn't do much. We stayed 3 nights and we didn't sleep any of them. The first day someone was doing renovation and hammering on rocks all day long and we find out it is privately owned land next to our unit and whoever owns it was banging away on rocks all day long. We feel like this sort of intrusion should have been mentioned ahead of time as we would have booked something else. From that point forward we had to change our plans and find things to do away from the village. Original plan was to unplug, relax, enjoy nature and read, etc. Our neighbors also loved smoking cigarettes nonstop so having to leave windows open due to heat all we got was cigarette smoke instead. Did I mention the bat yet? On our third and last night a bat flew through the open window and was flying around the bedroom as it couldn't figure out how to get back outside. We tried calling the after hours emergency phone numbers numerous times but one of the numbers didn't appear to work and nobody answered the other number. Being middle of the night and a couple hours later we gave up and slept on the couch and floor downstairs and prayed the bat wouldn't find its way to the lower level. Although it created some life long stories it wasn't what we had in mind and lack of after hours emergency contact in remote location like this is unacceptable"

"We loved our stay at Cerdeira — it was one of the absolute highlights of our 4 weeks on the road. We stayed in the Vale Cottage and enjoyed every minute of it. The views are simply unbeatable, and waking up to the fresh scent of the forest was unforgettable.
The kitchen is well equipped, and supermarkets are just a 15-minute drive away. Breakfast was excellent, with fresh local products and delicious coffee. The venue is very family-friendly, and there are plenty of activities nearby, from hiking to swimming in the natural pool.
Disliked:
Arriving with a lot of luggage is a challenge, as the car parking is far away and you need to carry the luggage along stairs and a narrow path. It would have been great if someone from the hotel could have assisted.
We stayed at Cerdeira in August, it was quite hot during the night as the cottages didnt have any AC. Not a problem for us as we are used to the heat, however not so pleasant if you have small kids or an elderly."

"Our stay at Cerdeira - Home for Creativity was completely unexpected and absolutely incredible. Getting there is an adventure in itself, with a scenic drive up a steep, one-lane mountain road that was quite enjoyable. When we arrived, the sight of the stone homes built into the mountainside felt like something out of a fantasy novel, adding to the charm of the place.
The property itself was breathtaking. Our cottage was beautifully designed with lots of natural wood and live-edge accents, and it had all the comforts you could ask for, including a kitchen and two balconies. It was like being immersed in nature, surrounded by the mountains and forests of Portugal.
One thing to note is that parking is a bit of a walk from the cottages, so packing a smaller bag for the trek up the stairs is helpful. We were glad we brought some groceries, as the remote location means dining options are limited, but that only added to the experience. We enjoyed a lovely dinner on our balcony with incredible views and woke up to a mystical fog, making the experience even more magical.
It was the perfect place to relax and recharge in the middle of our trip. Overall, a truly fantastic and unforgettable stay."

The Unique Schist Architecture
Many of these villages were historically inhabited by agricultural communities. Over time, some, like Cerdeira, experienced depopulation as residents moved to urban centers. However, there's been a resurgence of interest in preserving and revitalizing these unique settlements. Cerdeira, in particular, has been transformed into an arts and crafts hub, breathing new life into its ancient stone structures while respecting their heritage.
When exploring Cerdeira, take time to appreciate the details: the way the stones are laid, the small windows designed to keep interiors cool, and the overall sense of history embedded in each structure. It’s a living museum that offers a glimpse into a traditional way of life, now infused with a vibrant artistic spirit.
Experiencing Cerdeira as an Arts & Crafts Hub
The presence of the arts community adds a unique layer to the visitor experience. It means that alongside the historical charm, you'll find a contemporary creative energy. This blend of old and new is evident in the thoughtfully designed accommodations and the artistic touches found throughout the village. It offers a chance to engage with art in a deeply immersive and inspiring natural setting.
If you're interested in art or simply appreciate creative endeavors, look into the workshop schedules. It's a fantastic opportunity to learn a new skill, connect with artists, and take home a unique, handmade souvenir. Even if you don't participate in a workshop, the artistic atmosphere is palpable and contributes significantly to Cerdeira's distinctive charm.
Navigating the Remote Location
Once you arrive, parking is available, but it's a considerable walk to the accommodations, involving stairs and uneven paths. This makes packing light a practical necessity. For those with mobility issues or a lot of luggage, this can be a significant consideration.
Dining options directly within the village can be limited, and nearby restaurants often require advance reservations. Therefore, it's wise to either bring groceries to utilize the well-equipped cottage kitchens or to book dinner reservations well in advance. This preparation ensures you can fully relax and enjoy the serene environment without logistical stress.
