What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the surreal beauty and unique contrast of the Mistérios do Pico lava fields, calling it an exceptional and must-do hike. While challenging at times, the dramatic scenery of black lava against lush greenery is consistently praised. Some find it overcrowded at peak times, and caution is advised on slippery, muddy sections, especially during or after rain.
"A moderate-hard trail. Overcrowded at the beginning (12 a.m.) and hard to go around the slow people since there is no space on the trail to get around them. Otherwise a really nice environment and scenery."
Matúš Gontko
"Amazing hike, really challenging at times, but we managed to it with 4 and 7 years kids. Better to avoid during rainy days as it is really slipper at times and muddy."
Dovilė Belickė
"An exceptional hike that will challenge you mentally and physically. Depending on your level of physical activity it is not a trail I would recommend for someone just starting out. A wide trailhead at the beginning leads you into a well shaded forest and a small lake. The trail was wet and had some very soft areas with deeper areas of mud. The trail narrows in other parts where feet are in close proximity to one another. This is one of the best trails I have hiked thus far. Be sure to make the extra 2.2 km walk to Lagos do Patas and up Pico Gaspar."

The Volcanic Origins of Mistérios do Pico
This area is part of a larger geological park on Terceira Island, showcasing the island's volcanic heritage. The unique soil composition and the porous nature of the lava rock create a distinct microclimate that supports a surprising variety of plant life. The contrast between the dark, rugged lava and the vibrant, resilient flora is a key element of its visual appeal.
Understanding the volcanic history adds a deeper appreciation to the hike. It's a chance to witness firsthand the forces of nature that created these islands and to walk on land that was once molten. The Black Mystery Trail (Mistério Negro) is specifically designed to guide visitors through the most significant and visually striking parts of these lava fields, offering an immersive experience into this geological wonder.
Navigating the Trails: Tips for Hikers
For those seeking a bit more adventure, the trail offers extensions to Lagos do Patas (crater lakes) and Pico Gaspar (a viewpoint). These add mileage and elevation, so be prepared for a longer and more strenuous hike. It's crucial to assess your fitness level and the weather conditions before attempting these extensions. Bringing plenty of water and snacks is highly recommended, as there are no facilities along the trails themselves.
Crowd management is also a consideration. The trailhead can become congested, particularly around midday. Visitors often suggest arriving early in the morning to enjoy a more peaceful experience and to have more space on the narrower parts of the trail. If you encounter slow-moving groups, be patient, as passing can be difficult in certain sections.
