What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Gruta do Carvão, calling it an 'AMAZING' and 'unique' attraction. The knowledgeable guides and impressive geological formations are consistently praised. While the short tour is accessible, the adventurous long tour is a highlight for thrill-seekers, though it requires advance booking and good physical condition. Some find the cost a bit high for the duration of the short tour.
"AMAZING!!
We did the short tour at the beginning of our vacation. Staff here is so nice and friendly and they explained everything well.
I then proceeded to do the long tour three days after (please note: the long tour only goes once a week and has space for 5 people so you have to book it weeks or even months in advance. I was alone and could join the group of 4 that had already booked the tour).
The long tour is soooo incredible, you will have to walk on rocks, and crawl through tight spaces. Again, be prepared, if you are claustrophobic I do NOT recommend this tour. You also need to be in a decent shape to do the long tour (I am not a sporty person, but I am in a decent shape). If you like adventure, I really, really recommend the long tour. Our tour guide (I believe his name was Hugo) was also amazing and so so nice. I loved this place!!"

"Make a reservation in advance, because they quickly sell out! It's definitely a must see if you're in Ponta Delgada. The short tour is perfect if you're not used to exploring caves. The paths are a bit difficult to walk on, so make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes that support your ankles, and you're in good physical condition (not prone to falling). The temperature in the caves was around 15°C and it wasn't very wet. Our guide was very knowledgeable on volcanic caves and gave us a good tour. We loved all the information she gave us. We visited two caves, which were very interesting to see. The weekly long tour allows you to crawl further into the caves, so make sure to wear old clothes that protect you from the super sharp rocks."

"Its Volcanic lava tubes and rock formations very safe, it an easy walk & accessible, for most people but its not flat and there isn't any lifts just around 40-50 stairs and steps. This need booking a day before you dock or more if you've internet. A gem of a place to go to. We hired electric bikes on line from bike hire in the port, and cycled to the place which is only 3 miles from the port. We booked a tour at 10:30 cost was just few euro. Really impressive attraction and very interesting and Unique. DONT MISS out."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Ensure children wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain. While the short tour is generally fine, be mindful of any potential claustrophobia if your child is sensitive to enclosed spaces. Exploring the Lava Tube: Short vs. Long Tour
The long tour, however, is for the true adventurer. This exclusive tour, with very limited weekly availability and a maximum of five participants, delves deeper into the lava tube system. It requires participants to be in good physical condition and involves navigating through tight passages and even crawling. Visitors are advised to wear old clothes that can withstand sharp rocks. This tour offers a more immersive and challenging exploration of the volcanic landscape, making it a highlight for thrill-seekers.
Regardless of the tour chosen, comfortable and sturdy footwear is paramount. The terrain inside the lava tube is uneven and can be slippery. The consistent temperature of around 15°C means you won't need heavy winter gear, but a light layer might be appreciated. Booking well in advance is crucial for both tours, but especially for the highly sought-after long tour.
Geological Significance of Gruta do Carvão
Within the lava tube, visitors can observe a variety of volcanic structures, including stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations, which develop over time from mineral-rich water seeping through the rock. The sheer scale and complexity of the tube system provide invaluable insights into the processes of volcanic eruptions and lava flow dynamics. Guides often share detailed information about the island's formation and the ongoing efforts to preserve these natural wonders for future generations.
Understanding Gruta do Carvão is key to understanding the geology of São Miguel Island. It serves as a natural laboratory for geologists and a fascinating educational experience for tourists, highlighting the dynamic geological history of the Azores archipelago. The preservation efforts ensure that this unique environment remains intact for scientific study and public appreciation.
