What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitor experiences at Quinta Pedagógica dos Prazeres are mixed, with many praising the charming atmosphere, delicious homemade cider, and unique scarecrow displays. However, significant concerns have been raised about the welfare of the animals, with reports of poor living conditions, lack of care, and distressed animals.
"I honestly have no words to describe what I saw today. 💔 The animals here are kept in absolutely awful, unethical conditions. They live in filth, with dirty water, and I’m not even sure if they’re fed regularly. Many looked sick, stressed, and trapped in tiny cages.
A tortoise was crammed in a tiny cage with roosters (?!), clearly desperate to escape.
In two cages side by side were two duck families. One poor duck seemed to belong to the other family and was desperately trying to reach them. 😔😠
⚠️ Trigger warning: animal cruelty ⚠️
All the roosters were shoved into one cage. As many know, this is a recipe for disaster because they’ll fight for dominance. One rooster looked unalived —lying still, not breathing—while the others pecked at him. After a while, he started moving, trying to run, but the others kept attacking. He was malnourished, injured, bald from missing feathers, and had nowhere to hide. 💔
I reported it to someone at the tea room based in the allotment. A kind lady passed it on to (what I assume is) the owner, but sadly, she didn’t seem to care at all. I don’t know what happened after… and that breaks my heart.
It leaves a lot to think about overall condition of animals in small Portuguese villages."

"Lovely little farm, currently undergoing renovation. We bought some cidra, which was really nice, and our kid absolutely loved the scarecrows!"

"If you are an animal lover, then stay away from this "zoo" it would break your heart. The conditions the animals are being kept in are atrocious. The pens are too small, full of dirt and stones. There is no water for the animals to swim in, the tubs of drinking water are filthy, and most of the animals are losing their fur and feathers due to stress and a bad diet. The terrapins, although they have clean water they have no logs in which to sunbath on, and as winter is approaching in Madeira, they need to sunbath in order not to catch cold. All the animals were clambering towards us looking for food. Which by the looks of it was a few handfulls of clover. We are led to believe that this "zoo" is run in conjunction with the Church next door. If this is the case, then shame on the church for not providing enough money to look after the animals properly. I'm not sure if Madeira has an animal charity, but this "zoo" needs urgent attention or better still shut down immediately and the animals housed in proper homes and seen by a veterinarian. It doesn't even deserve the one-star, but you can't give zero stars on Google, which it deserves."
