What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Grutas de São Vicente to be a fascinating and educational experience, offering great value for the entrance fee. The guided tours through the lava tubes and the informative exhibits about Madeira's volcanic origins are consistently praised. Some minor issues with navigation and occasional temporary closures have been noted.
"We had some problems finding the parking lot and the entrance because Google maps said it was in the middle of the roundabout but that's on us. Once you stop looking at the map and start paying attention to the signposts it's actually really easy to get to. For the 8€ entrance fee we got a half hour presentation with movies about how the island was born. After that there was a half hour guided tour through the cave with an amazing tour guide. The cave itself is beautiful and should be visited by everyone who spends some time on this wonderful island. Thanks for the opportunity."

"Fascinating historical walk through the tunnels, with a guide who narrated in both English and Portuguese!
Probably 2 hours worth of exhibits to see. Fascinating film clip at end, and journey to the centre of the earth exhibit too (with a 3d film!)"

"This is more than just caves or grottos.
The walk through the lava tubes is around 700 metres, a well guided and explained walk in Portuguese, English and German. This leads you into an exhibition centre with numerous artefacts, then a film of how the island was formed, and finally onto a 3D film about the island and the caves.
Excellent value at only 8 euros per person. It's very easy to find, well sign posted, worth hiring a car for the day (from as little as 36 euros) and doing your own thing, rather than paying a tour operator 25 euros per person."
