Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the convent's serene atmosphere, its fascinating history of the Capuchin friars, and the absolutely stunning ocean views from the Serra da Arrábida. The simple, austere cells offer a powerful glimpse into a life of devotion. However, the need for advance booking and the challenging, cliffside drive can be deterrents for some.

"This is a beautiful white washed walls convent encrusted on the top of Serra da Arrabida, south of Lisbon, overlooking the ocean, with a fascinating history of its foundations and of the capuchin priests who lived there. They were part of a reform movement within the Franciscan order, 16th century, known for its emphasis on simplicity, poverty, and a contemplative life, focusing on serving the poor and marginalized."

Paula Terra-Arte

"Arrabidas Monastery of Saint Mary
This place is magical and a bridge between us, regular people, and these special ones who had none or very little ego. It was a interesting experience to see the conditions they lived in, how little they needed and only imagine how much faith they had. The ocean view is incredible! The only problem I saw was the conservation state it is in. The Oriental Foundation has been trying to recover it, but it still has a lot of damages from the time it was abandoned. Anyway an amazing experience totally worth it!"

Debora Motherway

"If you have a fear of heights, the drive is terrifying. Road is along the cliffs edge for about 10 km. When we arrived, unfortunately it was closed. It may only be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays by appointment."
