Jaime, 4.° Duque de Bragança, cerca de 1515, sendo assim um dos mais antigos coutos de Portugal, função que ainda mantém. No seu interior encontra-se um vasto património arquitetónico, como as suas três capelas, o paço e ainda algumas pequenas casas. O muro envolvente tem 6 portas. A Porta de São Bento é a principal porta de entrada e era a que servia o Paço Ducal."
