Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Old Municipal Cemetery Mayagüez for its beautiful, clean, and serene grounds, often highlighting the helpfulness of the staff. However, a significant concern for some is the difficulty in locating ancestral graves, with reports of remains being exhumed due to unpaid 'rental' fees for niches, leading to frustration and uncertainty.

"I went looking for my great great aunt burial site and nobody at the cemetery could tell me where her remains were, even though her name and date of burial were in their own book of burials. After talking to the guys who were working there, they referred me to their boss. Their boss referred me to his boss and so on. I ended up talking to the director of the municipal agency in charge of the cemetery. Supposedly, everybody was looking to find where she was buried but nobody was able to find her remains. One of the people I was talking to said to me something so weird that I will never forget. He said that the people buried in niches, like my great great aunt is, are kept there on a "rent basis". Their families need to continue paying certain amount of money every month. If after a certain amount of time, he didn't specify how long, the rent is not paid the bodies are exhumed and put in a box in a different place. Is that even legal?, I thought to myself. Well, my great great aunt was buried there in 1971 and I have no idea if her "rent" has been paid. Did they exhume her remains and that's why they can't be found?? I don't know, I hope not. I was at the cemetery for hours and talked to many many people including supervisors and directors. Nobody could find where she was buried, nobody could find her remains even though their book of burials stated clearly that she was buried there. Besides, I was at her funeral and I was present when she was buried there. It was crazy. It gave me the impression something "fishy" was happening. I will never know. My great great aunt's name is Brigida Velez Torres. Her burial was September 23rd, 1971."
