Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Grand Bénare for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Mafate and Cilaos cirques, often calling it a 'must-do' on La Réunion. "Amazing view, great trail, very beautiful... Its looking close for trail from Maido, but its real 3 hours walking. Its more and more easy compare to Piton des Neiges and if you want easy trail to the one of the highest peak I recommend. Piton des Neiges is opposite of Grand Benare. All two peak is very beautiful."

"A must when visiting La Réunion. Amazing views all along the hike into Mafate. People say that it’s easy because the elevation gain is gradual, but I found it exhausting. Although, we started at 1800 meters, making the hike 1000 meters elevation gain. We took the sentier du grand bord along the cliff edge and then the chemin de la glacière on the way back. Get to the summit before 9:30 or 10am."

The Grand Bénare Hike: A Traveler's Perspective
The trail offers a gradual elevation gain, making it more accessible than the challenging Piton des Neiges. However, the sustained walking can still be exhausting. The views throughout the climb are a major highlight, providing glimpses into the remote Mafate cirque and the picturesque Cilaos cirque. It's a must-do for many visiting La Réunion, offering a different perspective of the island's dramatic topography.
When planning your route, consider the path. The 'sentier du grand bord' is noted for its scenic cliff-edge views, while the 'chemin de la glacière' (glacier path) is sometimes advised against for its monotonous scenery on the return journey. Proper footwear, ample water, and sun protection are essential for a comfortable and safe hike.
Navigating the Trails and Views
The panoramic views from the summit are the undisputed star of the show. Visitors are treated to sweeping vistas of the island's three main cirques: Mafate, Salazie, and Cilaos. These views are particularly spectacular in the early morning light, when the mist often clears to reveal the dramatic, amphitheater-like valleys carved by erosion. The sheer scale and rugged beauty of these natural formations are awe-inspiring and a primary reason for the hike's popularity.
It's important to note that while the hike is considered less strenuous than other major peaks on the island, it still demands respect. The terrain can be uneven, and the sun exposure can be intense. Planning your hike for the cooler parts of the day and being prepared with essentials will significantly enhance the experience and allow you to fully appreciate the breathtaking scenery.
