What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Choral Temple is lauded for its stunning neo-Moorish architecture and rich historical significance, offering a glimpse into Bucharest's Jewish heritage. Visitors appreciate the grandeur of the interior, particularly the women's galleries, and the opportunity to learn from knowledgeable community members. However, some guests have reported negative interactions with staff, and the experience can feel more like a historical site than a traditional museum.
"Our recent visit to the Choral Synagogue in Bucharest was a deeply disappointing and upsetting experience. Despite checking the hours and making sure it wasn't a holiday, we were rudely denied entry by the staff.
The staff's behavior was completely off-putting and unkind. They were unhelpful and seemed determined to prevent us from entering. The worst part was when an employee screamed at my elderly father, who had simply tried to take a picture of the building. This kind of aggressive and disrespectful treatment is unacceptable and completely ruined what should have been a peaceful and educational visit.
The synagogue is a beautiful piece of architecture, but the hostile staff made it impossible to appreciate. I would strongly advise anyone visiting to be prepared for a potentially very unpleasant encounter."

"That's not actually a synagogue, but rather a museum where there's nothing on display. Yet the guys charge you 30 lei for a ticket. In contrast to the real Jewish museum, located in a former synagogue as well, which is free of charge."

"The Coral Temple is the main synagogue in Bucharest. It has a very impressive interior with decorative two-level galleries for the women. However, we were told that many female worshippers are too old to climb the stairs up to the gallery. So a curtain has been set up shielding the right-side of the downstairs pews, allowing the women to sit there during services.
We visited with a group of some 30 tourists and heard a senior member of the Jewish congregation explain about the history of the building and the Jewish Community. He was full of interesting information, but spoke so fast - like 100 km and hour - that some of the information was lost on us.
There was security personnel at the entrance and bags had to be left there before entering the building."

This collaborative effort ensured that the temple could continue to serve its community and stand as a historical monument.
While the community may be described as 'dying' by some, the presence of knowledgeable members who share stories and historical details during visits offers a profound connection to the past. Learning about the community's journey adds a deeply personal layer to the visit, making it more than just sightseeing. The temple stands as a symbol of continuity and remembrance.
Visitor Experience and Etiquette
