"I urge everyone to visit this sanctuary at least once in their life. The work they do is second to none and the tour given was so touching and moving! Knowledgable staff who really do care about the work they’re doing! Even if you can’t visit donate as they really deserve it. So emotional but I would definitely visit again next time I’m in Romania!"

"The sanctuary does really important work. Be aware bringing younger kids the stories are heartbreaking. The tour is nice the guides are really good. I’d book in advance it can be busy at the tour times. I’d also go early so it’s not so busy.
The animals are well taken care of, and remember it’s not a zoo."
Stacey Roden
"The place is impressive and their mission is not an easy one. Very nice to visit and enjoyed listening to the story - the effort required to build and maintain this is titanic - so this should not be underestimated. The prices are a bit steep for kids - it should be a bit cheaper - they are the ones who need to hear the story and pass this on - as they are the adults of tomorrow. Would be nice if you could see more or the reservation on some special tours - safari style with a car, maybe a high vantage point with binoculars or something similar. Overall, a wonderful experience."

The Mission of Libearty Bear Sanctuary
The sanctuary's work is crucial in Romania, a country that has faced challenges with bear hunting authorizations. By offering a protected environment, Libearty allows these bears to live out their lives in dignity, often for much longer than they would in the wild. Visitors contribute directly to this mission through their tour fees, which are vital for covering the substantial daily costs of feeding and caring for over 100 bears.
Beyond the bears, the organization also facilitates dog adoptions at a separate site, showcasing a broader commitment to animal welfare. The experience at Libearty is designed to be educational and moving, fostering a deeper understanding of animal cruelty and the importance of conservation efforts.
A Visitor's Experience: What to Expect
The terrain within the sanctuary involves walking on hills and gravel paths across its 69-hectare expanse. Visitors are strongly advised to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. The enclosures are designed to mimic natural habitats, allowing visitors to see bears roaming, climbing, and swimming in pools, offering a glimpse into their natural behaviors. Seeing bears, including cubs, playing in the water is a particularly memorable sight.
While the experience is deeply rewarding, it can also be emotional. Standing inside a representation of a bear's former cage can be a moving reminder of the abuse these animals have endured. The sanctuary emphasizes that it is not a zoo, but a place of rescue and rehabilitation, and visitors' contributions are vital to its continued operation.
