"Amazing !!!"
PATHFINDER BRO
"In the past, the first churches of Blagoveshchensk were located on this very spot: the Church of St. Nicholas and the Cathedral of the Intercession. Both have not survived.
The Church of St. Nicholas was built from the logs of the same log house in which the bodies of the first settlers who did not survive the winter of 1856-1857 were buried. It became the first permanent building of the Ust-Zeyskaya stanitsa. The church was erected on a hill four miles from the military outpost.
In 1879-1883, the majestic Cathedral of the Intercession was erected nearby - the first stone building in Blagoveshchensk. The Church of St. Nicholas not only survived, but in the early 1890s it was renovated with a generous donation from the Tsarevich who visited the city and was touched by the priest's story about the birth of Blagoveshchensk.
During the years of persecution of the church, all the Orthodox churches of the Amur capital, including the Pokrovsky Cathedral, were destroyed. And only the Holy Nicholas Church, deprived of its dome and bell tower, stood until 1980. The church building was successively occupied by the radio committee, the city executive committee's culture department, a kindergarten, and a dermatovenerologic dispensary. Over the years, the old building fell into disrepair and was eventually also demolished.
The construction of churches in Blagoveshchensk was revived in the post-Soviet years. In 1998-2003, a new cathedral in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in Ryolochny Lane. Its architecture recreated the features of the Pokrovsky Cathedral. Then a small log church was built - a copy of the lost Holy Nicholas Church."
