"An untouched corner of nature with the cleanest river. The most interesting water route along the Bolshaya Kokshaga River, land excursions along the reserve cordons and Lake Shusher"
viktor drobot
"Forests occupy 95% of the reserve's territory. The predominant place belongs to pine forests growing in different ecological conditions: from dry to damp habitats, from poor to rich soils. Birch forests, the second in terms of area, arose on the sites of burnt or cut down pine forests, i.e. they are secondary.
Spruce forests give the reserve forests a truly taiga appearance. Spruce forests are represented on 7.5% of the territory and contain a significant admixture of deciduous trees (aspen, linden, birch).
The Bolshaya Kokshaga Reserve is located at the junction of two forest vegetation subzones: southern taiga and mixed forests.
More than 700 species of vascular plants grow in the forests, meadows and swamps, and this is about half of all known in the Republic of Mari El.
The diverse activities of the living creatures that inhabit the forest have a significant impact on its life. Representatives of the protected fauna can be found everywhere - from the tops of tree crowns to deep soil horizons where the roots end. In natural conditions, undisturbed by human activity, there live 50 species of mammals."
