What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Chita Datsan for its beautiful and unique architecture, vibrant colors, and peaceful atmosphere. Many appreciate the tranquil grounds and the opportunity for quiet reflection. The on-site cafe is also a popular spot for its tasty pastries and reasonable prices.
"Chita’s main Buddhist temple lies just outside the centre, a 15-minute walk. It’s a recently built affair, but well-kept, with all its prayer wheels, butter lamps and yin-yang drums firmly in place. The tranquil grounds are home to a tiny buuzy (dumpling) joint.
The name of datsan (Damba Braibunling) means "where the rice of the Buddhist teaching was collected." Chita, which is the capital of Zabaikalsky Krai, has become the second Russian city after St. Petersburg to be the lucky owner of a Buddhist shrine, in addition to the existing Christian and Islamic churches.
Actually, there had been a Buddhist temple in Chita later destroyed by fire in 1914. It is symbolic that the second temple was opened on the same date as the first, 111 years later. The burnt datsan is the prototype of the current one. New site is supplied with modern conveniences combined with ancient Buryat architecture also featuring Tibetan, Chinese and Russian styles. Two cast-iron lions at the entrance protect the main temple from evil spirits. The place welcomes anyone no matter if you adhere to Buddhism or not."

"I recently visited the Chita Datsan (Buddhist temple) for the first time, and it left a deep impression on me. Founded in the late 19th century, this datsan is one of the oldest Buddhist centers in Russia and holds great historical and cultural significance.
What makes it even more special is its location — nestled next to a forest, the temple feels incredibly peaceful and connected to nature. The quiet surroundings enhance the sense of calm and sacredness.
Whether you’re spiritual or simply curious, I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once. It’s a unique part of Buryat and Russian heritage that deserves to be seen, felt, and remembered."
