"The Eagle Column was installed in the Gatchina Park in 1770 under its first owner, Count Grigory Orlov. By this time, the Orlov brothers had distinguished themselves with impeccable service and were at the height of their fame. Alexei Orlov commanded the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean, and Grigory was a favorite of Catherine II and helped her in all her endeavors. It should be noted that the image of a proud bird of prey was part of the Orlov family coat of arms. The Eagle Column was created in St. Petersburg, in the workshops of the St. Isaac's Cathedral construction office. Then it was brought to Tsarskoye Selo, and later to Gatchina as a gift from the Empress to the Orlov brothers for their services to the Fatherland. At that time, the brothers Grigory, Alexei and Feodor, Ivan and Vladimir were often called "Catherine's eagles" for their unity and assistance to the Empress in her ascension to the throne.
The marble monument was created by the architect Antonio Rinaldi. The structure is installed on a high rectangular pedestal, the height of the monument is 6.4 meters, the diameter is 50 cm. By the middle of the 18th century, the column had become very dilapidated and was replaced with a new one, which exactly repeated the old monument. The eagle sculpture was badly damaged during the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. Currently, a marble copy of it is installed at the top of the monument.
