Navigating Girvas Canyon: Safety First

Girvas Canyon is a geological marvel, but its natural state means no railings or stairs. Be extremely cautious, especially if visiting during water discharge from the hydroelectric station, which can create dangerous torrents. This is not a place for small children due to the rugged terrain.

Understanding Access and Fees

While some reviews mention entry fees and paid parking, others suggest it's possible to visit for free by parking along the road. The 'museum' aspect is debated, with many visitors focusing on the natural beauty and geological features rather than curated exhibits.

Reviews Summary

Girvas Canyon is a unique geological site featuring an ancient volcano and, seasonally, a powerful waterfall. Visitors appreciate its raw, natural beauty and the chance to explore solidified lava flows. However, the lack of maintenance, safety infrastructure, and inconsistent fee structures are common criticisms, making it a destination best suited for cautious adventurers.

"Amazing place"

Dayanne Alfred

"The Girvas volcano in Karelia was formed several billion years ago. It is considered a geological monument. The place is very beautiful. In good, dry weather, you can go down directly to the volcano and climb around it. Below, you can see the direction in which it flowed by the solidified stone lava. Just be careful, despite the fact that this is a famous place, it is not well-maintained. There are no bridges, no stairs, no railings to hold on to. !!!!!! ATTENTION - the hydroelectric power station can open the floodgates and the water will fall down in a powerful stream. This is very dangerous, so be careful and listen to the sounds, since no one will warn you about the release of water. Opposite the entrance to the volcano there is a parking lot and a toilet (they charge 100 rubles per person). But if you do not want to pay, you can leave your car near the road and go in absolutely free. No one asks for tickets. P.S. Sorry, we were there this year, everything became paid, 200 rubles for entry. Everything is fenced in, you can't go down. We made an observation deck and steps. But it will take a few minutes of your time 🥲"

"In the spring, when the snow melts, the paleovolcano is not visible, and the Girvas waterfall appears instead. This is due to the discharge of water from the Palyozerskaya hydroelectric station, which is located nearby. As a rule, the reset is carried out for several days - a week in late April - early May.
That's why I didn't see the volcano (but there was a powerful and noisy waterfall.

Don't buy tickets, don't have to pay for parking! This is not an environmental fee, but simply a fee for unknown reasons."
