"From the outside it looks rather modest and strict. But inside!..
There is not a single centimeter of the interior that is not covered with frescoes! It has been a long time since we have seen such a density of images, especially from the 17th century, and very well preserved.
The baroque wooden carved iconostasis is very reminiscent of the iconostasis in the Cathedral of Procopius the Righteous in Veliky Ustyug in the manner of carving.
The ringing voices of the guides distract somewhat from full immersion in this beauty, but this is not a reproach to the temple; for full immersion, it is worth coming here during a church service."

Valentin Orlov

"The Trinity Cathedral, towering in the center of the Old Town of the Kostroma Ipatiev Monastery, was built in 1650-1652 on the site of an older (mid-6th century) cathedral of the same name, destroyed by a hurricane in 1649. In 1650, the archimandrite of the Ipatiev Monastery received a charter from Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich on the construction of a new cathedral on the site of the destroyed church with an aisle in the name of St. Michael Malein, the patron saint of Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov. The construction of the new Trinity Cathedral was completed in 1652. In 1652, work began on creating the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral, and two years later, in 1654, the interiors of the cathedral began to be decorated with frescoes. A team of icon painters headed by the royal icon painter Vasily Ilyin Zapokrovskiy from Kostroma was invited to perform them. But they were not destined to fully fulfill such an honorable and responsible order. In 1656, a plague epidemic began in Kostroma, taking the lives of most of the Kostroma residents, including V. I. Zapokrovskiy. Nevertheless, in two years the masters created icons for the five-tiered iconostasis of the cathedral and partially painted the western gallery of the temple. Only 30 years later, the work on painting the cathedral was continued. The artel of the famous royal icon painter Gury Nikitin (Kineshemtsev), whose name among the masters of the royal icon painting workshop stood on a par with Simon Ushakov, painted the cathedral in three summer months with frescoes of the greatest artistic value. Undoubtedly, the Trinity Cathedral represents the pinnacle of Russian monumental spiritual painting of the 17th century. The third stage in the creation (completion) of the decoration of the cathedral - 1911-1913. Completion of the painting of the church galleries by the team of Palekh icon painters headed by N. Sofonov."
