Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Sviatye Gory Cathedral for its fabulous beauty, unique two-tiered design, and abundance of holy relics and icons. The historical significance, particularly the Church of Childhood connected to St. Seraphim of Sarov, is deeply appreciated. While the architecture is a major draw, some may find the surrounding amenities limited.

"The cathedral is of fabulous beauty! It is two-tiered. It has many holy relics and icons filled with prayer. And what a beautiful iconostasis the cathedral has! Next to the temple is the place where little Prokhor, the future Seraphim of Sarov, fell from the scaffolding of the temple under construction."

"The Church of Childhood. Built by the parents of St. Seraphim of Sarov, it is a historically significant site for Orthodox Christians. The site of young Prokhor's fall from the bell tower is marked by a monument in the cathedral courtyard. The church contains ancient miraculous icons and an altar preserved during the persecution of the church. I recommend even non-believers to visit this architectural landmark!"

"Built in 1752-1778 in the Elizabethan Baroque style on the site of a one-story church in the name of Sergius of Radonezh that burned to the ground in 1751. Apparently, the project was prepared by one of Bartolomeo Rastrelli's students.

One day in 1761, 7-year-old Prokhor Moshnin (the future Reverend Seraphim of Sarov) went to the very top of the bell tower that was being built. Having left his mother, he fell from the height of the bell tower onto the ground covered with broken bricks and debris. Eyewitnesses to the incident did not expect to see Prokhor alive, but, to everyone's surprise, the boy remained unharmed.

During the Soviet period, the cathedral was plundered, and in 1933 it was decided to demolish it. However, thanks to the efforts of Kursk artists P.K. Likhin and G.A. Shuklin, the building was saved. From 1935 until the Great Patriotic War, there was a regional art gallery and workshops here. In 1942, the German occupation authorities allowed the cathedral to be opened for worship. After the war, the Sergiev-Kazan Cathedral never closed."
