What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the majestic, red-hued Mount Bolshoye Bogdo and its unique geological formations, often describing it as bombastically beautiful with gorgeous views. The spiritual significance of the site also resonates deeply with many. However, a significant drawback for some has been the confusing and sometimes unwelcoming experience with access restrictions for foreign visitors and vehicles, leading to disappointment.
"There is no information available online about tickets and entrance procedures to the park. We drove all the way there just to be told by a rude security guard at the gate of Bogdo Mountain that Foreign Vehicles and foreigners are not allowed here.
I explained this situation, via Google translate to a Russian speaking local. She called the cashier who then very politely explained to us that we are in a border area, we can enter on foot, but vehicle are not allowed.
We left without visiting the park. This was a bad experience for us, and I hope this can help any foreigners in future."

"I've been to this magnificent Bogdo mountain 2-3 times. I don't remember, it's about 8 hours by car from Elista. The mountain is majestic, red and huge. There is a salt lake nearby, and I couldn't pass it by. From there to Volgograd. In general, go there, you won't regret it."

"Sacred Mountain Bolshoe Bogdo
The mountain is a salt dome covered with sandstone, clay and limestone. In fact, it is an elongated hill 152 m above sea level.
The mountain is located on the territory of the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky Nature Reserve, which also includes the Baskunchak salt lake, lying at the foot of the mountain.
Mount Bolshoe Bogdo is sacred to Buddhists and some Kalmyks and is believed to have been consecrated by the Dalai Lama (according to some versions, by Buddha himself). Pilgrims from all over the world come here to worship.
From the foot of the mountain to the top, there are footbridges along which you can climb and admire the unusual relief, niches and caves, and then go down and walk around the mountain along the steppe, listening to the silence, the singing of birds, crickets and inhaling the aromas of various herbs."
