"Nikitsky Monastery is located away from the center of Pereslavl-Zalessky and is clearly visible from Alexander Mountain. This is the most ancient monastery of Pereslavl-Zalessky, according to some sources, founded earlier than 1186.

The year 1186 is considered important in the history of the monastery. On May 24 of this year, the ascetic of the Nikitsky monastery, the Monk Nikita the Stylite, suffered martyrdom at the hands of insidious attackers, who, before becoming a monk, was a princely tax collector under Yuri Dolgoruky and enjoyed an extremely bad reputation as a bribe-taker and covetous man until he repented and entered a monastery.

After the Mongol-Tatar invasion, there is no information about the Nikita monastery until the 15th century, when St. Photius the Metropolitan discovered the relics of St. Nikita the Stylite. In a very short period, the Nikitsky Monastery became a blooming garden, but in the Time of Troubles (1611), Lithuanian soldiers ravaged and burned the Nikitsky Monastery.

In 1923, the Soviet authorities closed the Nikitsky Monastery, while the unique library of the monastery was destroyed, the monastery archive was destroyed, and church silver, utensils, and icons were looted.

During the years of Soviet power, the monastery successively housed warehouses, a prison, and a driving school. In 1984, the central dome of the Nikitsky Cathedral collapsed.

The beginning of the revival of the Nikitsky Monastery can be considered in 1990, when believers served the first prayer service here on the feast of the Life-Giving Trinity. There is an opinion that Peter I probably stayed in the western rooms of the second floor of the refectory chambers during his first visits to Pereslavl.

Today, many of the buildings of the monastery have been restored, and the walls emanate history and that comfort and tranquility in search of which people wander around the world. Come and feel it for yourself."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Thousand Years of History

Sretensky Novodevichy Convent, also known as Nikitsky Monastery, boasts a history stretching back over a millennium, with its founding often cited before 1186. It's considered one of the most ancient monastic sites in Pereslavl-Zalessky. The monastery's narrative is deeply intertwined with the life of St. Nikita the Stylite, a former tax collector who repented and became a revered ascetic. His martyrdom within the monastery walls in 1186 is a pivotal event in its history. Reddit

The monastery has endured significant trials, including devastation during the Mongol-Tatar invasions and later during the Time of Troubles in the 17th century when Lithuanian forces ravaged it. The Soviet era brought further hardship, with the monastery being closed in 1923, its library and archives destroyed, and its treasures looted. For a period, it housed various secular functions, and even its central dome collapsed in 1984. Reddit

Despite these challenges, the spirit of the monastery endured. The revival began in 1990 with the first prayer services held on the feast of the Life-Giving Trinity. Today, many of its buildings have been restored, allowing visitors to connect with its rich past and experience the enduring tranquility that has drawn people for centuries. Reddit

The Spiritual Significance of St. Nikita

The story of St. Nikita the Stylite is central to the identity of Sretensky Novodevichy Convent. Originally a tax collector known for his greed, Nikita underwent a profound spiritual transformation, repenting and dedicating his life to asceticism within the monastery. His commitment to faith led him to a life of extreme self-denial, including standing on a pillar (stylite) for extended periods, a practice that earned him his epithet. Reddit

His martyrdom at the hands of attackers, who were allegedly former associates from his past life, cemented his status as a saint. The discovery of his relics in the 15th century by Metropolitan Photius led to a resurgence of the monastery's importance and pilgrimage. The veneration of St. Nikita continues to be a significant aspect of the convent's spiritual life, drawing believers seeking inspiration and intercession. Reddit
