What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Nikolai Leskov House Museum, even in its temporary location, to be a cozy and interesting experience. The guided tours are consistently praised for their engaging and informative nature, often inspiring a deeper appreciation for Leskov's work. While the renovation of the main building is noted, the current exhibition is considered well worth a visit.
"A wonderful museum and a wonderful excursion. In 2 small rooms (in Granovsky's house) there are unique objects and personal belongings of Nikolai Semenovich. The story is exciting, with examples, quotes. Children aged 12 and 13 listened enthusiastically, asked questions. They liked everything. There was a desire to reread Leskov's books. It is a pity that the writer's house itself has been under renovation for 8 years. We are really looking forward to the opening."

"After a drought in Orel on September 9th, rain began to fall, and I, drenched, approached the Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov Museum. Previously, it had been listed in guidebooks as Russia's only memorial and literary museum dedicated to the writer.
It was past 10:00 a.m., closed... I rang the intercom, and a middle-aged woman answered the call and pointed me to Granovsky's house, which now (temporarily) houses two rooms with Leskov. My mood soured, but like a charmed wanderer, I kept my composure and wandered through the home of the historian Timofey Nikolaevich Granovsky. I truly enjoyed it... Leskov's books played an active role in my upbringing, and I read them to my children and continue to read them to my grandchildren... A delight for the soul!"

"Currently (July 21), the mansion on Oktyabrskaya Street is undergoing renovation, and only a small portion of the impressive collection is on display in two halls in the T.N. Granovsky House Museum at 24 7 November Street, Oryol.
Currently, the recreated study displays a small portion of the writer's personal belongings, books from the memorial library, a portrait of Leskov painted by V.A. Serov a few days before the writer's death, and paintings by Repin and Shishkin, who were Leskov's friends.
But even this small collection is worth a visit. And be sure to book a tour; you'll learn many interesting things.
For example, about Leskov's great-granddaughter, Tatyana Leskova, who now lives in Brazil and will turn 99 on December 6, 2021. She has no children, and the Leskov line will end with her. Tatyana is the granddaughter of Andrei, the writer's only son from his second marriage (common-law marriage). It was Andrei who initiated the creation of the museum in memory of his father. Leskov's first marriage was unsuccessful. His wife, a wealthy Kiev resident, went bankrupt and subsequently went mad. Leskov's two children from his first marriage never had children of their own, and that lineage has since been broken. Incidentally, the writer has some interesting stories about choosing a wife.
In short, if you're ever in Oryol, the N.S. Leskov Museum is a must-see 🔥"
