Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Church of St. George Vzvoz for its historical significance as a UNESCO site and its distinctive Pskov architectural style, particularly its unique bell tower and interior structure. The peaceful atmosphere and friendly parishioners are frequently highlighted, making it a serene place for contemplation.
"The Church of St. George of Vzvoz is an Orthodox parish church in Pskov's Okolny Gorod on Georgievskaya Street. It is a historical and cultural monument of federal significance dating from the 15th to 19th centuries.
The church is constructed of limestone slabs, plastered and whitewashed. The walls of the main volume have three-lobed crowns. The drum is decorated with semicircular recesses, a runner and a curb, as well as a band of tiles depicting various images: "a man with a wedge-shaped beard and another without a beard"; a mythological beast, a bird, and a leopard. The side facades of the church have conventional tripartite divisions. The interior is unusual in the absence of supporting arches—the drum rests directly on the barrel vaults. In the southwest corner of the church, at the height of the choir, a stone tent is erected. A similar room is located in the altar, above the deacon's room. To the west, the church is adjoined by a low narthex with a porch supported by rounded pillars, above which stands a two-bay bell tower. To the east are three apses, the middle one wider and taller than the side ones and decorated with ridged ceilings."

"A gray, rainy day. But that doesn't spoil Pskov. It's so full of beauty that no rain can obscure it. Here's another glimpse of that beauty—typical Pskov church architecture with its unmistakably distinctive bell tower.
The area around the church is deserted. The church itself is deserted, too: a single soul in the church shop, and we peeked in, seeing the door open..."
