It was built at his own expense by the Rybinsk merchant Eltekov in memory of the rescue of Tsar Alexander II from an assassination attempt. The chapel was built in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker - the patron saint of travelers and merchants. In 1926, the chapel was closed and rebuilt beyond recognition, the chapel lost its 12 small domes. For some time, it housed the river port library, then the water police, then reconstruction work began. The exterior decoration was carried out based on old photographs of the chapel, the reconstruction was completed in 2011.

While traveling through Rybinsk, you could once stroll down Stoyalaya Street, but even then, few noticed the inconspicuous chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Today, this two-story building is quite beautiful, despite its relatively ordinary architectural design not long ago. Today, the chapel is striking in its appearance. Consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of merchants and travelers, it was built in 1867 by I.I. Eltekov, a churchwarden from the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, to commemorate the miraculous rescue of Tsar Alexander II on April 4, 1866. The chapel of that period was characterized by particularly wide pilasters with large capitals, majestic window openings, and beautiful kokoshniks positioned above the cornices, which perfectly complemented the tent crowning the bell tower, topped with a small onion-shaped cupola. The interior decoration is predominantly floral, and the window openings feature molded heads of cherubs. The walls are painted white, contrasting beautifully with the vibrantly colored moldings, complemented by incredibly vividly executed images of saints. All of these features make the Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker a true gem on the Volga Embankment."
