"The Grotto Pavilion (Morning Hall, Antiques Hall) is an architectural monument. It is located in Pushkin, in the Catherine Park, on the bank of the Bolshoy Pond. Each regular park ensemble of the 18th century was required to have the Hermitage, Grotto and artificial ruins pavilions. The Grotto of Tsarskoye Selo was designed and began to be built in 1755-1756 by B.F. Rastrelli. The project was approved in August 1749, but the construction and decoration lasted until 1782. In 1771, A. Rinaldi reworked the interior decoration project (initially, it was planned to decorate the walls with tuff and shells, which was to take 210 thousand large sea shells and 17½ poods of small ones; the wall decor based on Rinaldi's drawings has survived to this day), as the pavilion was being built, its name was changed."

"In the 1750s, Rastrelli erected the Grotto Pavilion on the shore of the then hexagonal Great Pond. Like a mysterious sea cave, the Grotto's sculptural decoration glorifies the element of water and the sea god Neptune. Elizabeth Petrovna ordered the pavilion's interior decorated with shells, and in the 1770s, at the behest of Catherine II, the architect Antonio Rinaldi redid the stucco work inside. Catherine II converted the Grotto into her study, where she would come in the mornings to sort diplomatic mail and drink coffee. During this time, the pavilion became known as the "morning hall." At 10:00 a.m., the empress's entourage would gather here on a special signal for a shared breakfast, and on warm summer evenings, tables would be set for dinner.
