Reviews Summary

Visitors often praise Marble Palace for its stunning historical interiors and diverse art collections, particularly the modern and contemporary exhibits. However, some find the cost high for the accessible areas and note a lack of English information. The palace's blend of history and art makes it a worthwhile, though sometimes debated, visit.

"As this place came recommended by our friend, we had no hesitation about coming here on our last day. Regrettably, it was a bit of disappointment. As it was the last place to visit we had a higher expectation I guess. Of course, the stairs and the 3 rooms were allowed to go in were beautiful as seen in my pictures but that was it. The rest 2 floors are full of rooms with "modern" arts and that's what was dissapointing about the whole visit. For 400 rubles you can visit much beautifully decorated buildings in St. Petersburg. Had there been a reduce fee for just the 3 rooms, I wouldn't mind. English was no exhistant and there was no such option from what we could make out later on. As the rooms are nicely heated, they will make you leave your clothing downstairs in the cloakroom. To sum it up, unless you are a lover of the currently exhibited art, the three rooms are not worth the money."

"Well worth a visit !

Mix of modern and historical art , the staff are mostly friendly and even have English. Get the ticket that allows you to visit the 4/5 museums over 2 day! Makes it much cheaper"

"Gorgeous palace in the Neva, part of the Russian Museum. They have great temporary collections, the interiors are beautiful an they hod events and concerts, so there are several different ways to visit."

A Glimpse into History and Art

Marble Palace, a significant part of the Russian Museum, was originally built for Grigory Potemkin, a favorite of Catherine the Great, and later became a royal residence. Its construction, completed in 1785, is a testament to the grandeur of the era, with its name derived from the extensive use of marble in its facade and interiors. While the palace itself is a historical marvel, its current role as a museum showcases a dynamic blend of past and present.

The palace now houses a significant portion of the Russian Museum's collection, focusing on Russian art from the 18th century to the present day. Visitors can explore the opulent historical rooms, which offer a glimpse into the palace's aristocratic past, featuring original decor and furnishings. This provides a stark contrast to the modern and contemporary art collections displayed on the upper floors, which include works by prominent Russian artists and international pieces from the Ludwig Museum collection.

Recent renovations have aimed to preserve the palace's historical integrity while adapting it for its role as a cultural institution. Despite some reviews noting a lack of original furniture in certain areas, the palace remains a vital space for experiencing Russian artistic heritage. The inclusion of temporary exhibitions ensures that the museum remains a vibrant and evolving destination for art enthusiasts, offering fresh perspectives with each visit.Reddit

Navigating the Collections

Marble Palace offers a dual experience: the preserved historical interiors and the diverse art exhibitions. The ground floor is dedicated to the palace's original splendor, allowing visitors to wander through rooms that echo with history. These spaces are often described as beautifully heated and well-maintained, providing a comfortable environment to appreciate the architectural details and the sense of grandeur.Reddit

Ascending to the upper floors reveals the palace's transformation into a modern art hub. Here, you'll find extensive collections of Russian art, ranging from classical paintings to avant-garde sculptures. The Ludwig Museum's branch, housed within Marble Palace, further enriches the collection with a significant array of international modern and contemporary art.Reddit This juxtaposition of historical architecture and cutting-edge art is a key draw for many visitors.

Beyond the permanent collections, Marble Palace frequently hosts temporary exhibitions. These rotating displays can cover a wide spectrum of artistic themes and periods, offering a chance to see unique and often thought-provoking works. Checking the museum's schedule in advance is recommended to make the most of these special showcases and to potentially combine your visit with concerts or other events held within the palace.Reddit
