What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Saratov Central Market is lauded for its stunning Art Nouveau architecture and as a vibrant hub for fresh local produce, especially dairy. While it offers a wide array of affordable clothing and consumer goods, some visitors note variability in the freshness of pre-packaged items. The market's historical significance and convenient location are consistently praised.
"Vasily Lyukshin received the commission to build the building from the Saratov City Duma in 1907. Together with a representative of the Saratov Duma, Lyukshin toured Odessa, Riga, St. Petersburg, and Moscow, inspecting markets, a process that took three years. The building's design was completed in 1911-1912, and construction took place in 1914-1916. [1]
The indoor market was built under the influence of the advanced design trends of the time: a frame system, the use of steel trusses, and new materials. Even then, the market was equipped with refrigeration chambers designed for electric use.
The combination of glass entrance and window openings with reinforced concrete structures lends expressiveness and lightness to the building. The difference in roof height and the glass dome-lantern allowed the sales area to be illuminated with full daylight, creating a sense of spaciousness. Electric clocks were specially commissioned from the P. Bure trading house for installation on the façades of the Covered Market. Sculptors such as V.K. Fedorov, P.F. Dunduk, and Sofya Reztsova worked on the façade design, and students from the Bogolyubovsky Drawing School also contributed.
The building, designed in the Art Nouveau architectural style, added new expressive features to the architectural ensemble of Saratov in the early 20th century without standing out from the overall appearance of the city. The Covered Market was rightfully recognized as one of the best not only in Saratov but in Russia, becoming a true "architectural masterpiece" of the early 20th century. [2]
In 1938, the market's steam boiler exploded, killing 47 people and injuring many more.
The 4-star review is only for the explosion in 1938."

"A beautiful old building, one of the few beautiful buildings in the city, plus inside there is a good food market where you can buy almost all the products. As for clothing stores - they mainly sell consumer goods."

Architectural Marvel of Art Nouveau
The facade is adorned with electric clocks commissioned from the P. Bure trading house and features intricate work by sculptors like V.K. Fedorov and Sofya Reztsova, with contributions from students of the Bogolyubovsky Drawing School. Designed in the Art Nouveau architectural style, the market seamlessly integrates into the city's ensemble, adding a unique charm without being ostentatious. It was rightfully recognized as one of the best markets in Russia, a true 'architectural masterpiece' of the early 20th century.
Despite its beauty, the market has a somber historical note: a steam boiler explosion in 1938 tragically resulted in 47 fatalities. This event, though tragic, is a part of the building's history. Today, the market continues to serve as a vital community hub, blending its historical grandeur with the daily bustle of commerce.
A Culinary and Commercial Hub
Beyond groceries, the market has evolved to include a significant section for clothing and consumer goods, particularly on the second floor. Here, shoppers can find a wide array of items at what are described as low prices, including jeans, suits, shirts, dresses, cosmetics, and jackets. While the produce is consistently praised, some reviews suggest that the freshness of pre-packaged goods like Korean pickles can vary, and the quality of milk has seen some changes over time.
Despite these minor fluctuations, the market remains a popular spot due to its wide range of products, friendly sellers, and convenient location with good public transport access and parking. It offers a comprehensive shopping experience, from essential groceries to everyday apparel.
