Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Kutuzov Monument for its majestic presence and its prime location, offering stunning views of the Assumption Cathedral and ancient fortress walls. The well-maintained park is a highlight, providing a pleasant atmosphere. Some note that while parking is available, it can be challenging, and recommend exploring the area on foot.

"A monumental, proud, majestic monument in probably the most beautiful and powerful place of ancient Smolensk. Despite the rather classical (in my unprofessional understanding) sculptural solution, the monument really makes an impression. Even taking into account the fact that such great people in our minds exist more as a set of historical anecdotes, incidents and heroic deeds than as a whole (and even more so - historical - personality). Let us note, however, that a significant part of this impression is the place where it is located: on one side - the walls of the ancient city, on the other - the picturesque temple mountain - all this somehow disconnects you from modernity, even despite the fact that the monument and the park are a patch, surrounded on all sides by dense traffic. You stand there, head up, looking into the face of the Most Serene Prince, who designed and implemented one of the greatest victories in Russian history, and you hope that not all is lost for your common Motherland.
The park, by the way, is quite good by local standards - both in terms of the organization of space and in terms of the maintenance of the territory. Believe me, for modern Smolensk this is a rarity on the verge of a miracle: the city (even its tourist - that is, the Dnieper - part), unfortunately, makes a depressingly unkempt impression - flowerbeds, if there are any, are not watered, some dry sticks are left from the flowers, the lawn is not mown, every other lamp works.
Near the park, in principle, there is a place to park a car, but there is heavy traffic and a specific terrain, so there is a tight spot. However, I would recommend moving around the central part on foot, given the density of interesting locations."

"A beautiful monument to the great Russian commander M.I. Kutuzov. Nearby is a cozy and quiet park offering a wonderful view of B. Sovetskaya Street, the Assumption Cathedral, and a section of the Smolensk fortress wall with the Dnieper Gate."

Алексей Петров

"A worthy monument to the great Russian commander.
Authors: sculptor G.I. Motovilov and architect L.M. Polyakov.
Opened on June 20, 1954.
A full-length bronze figure of the field marshal in a ceremonial uniform is installed on a pink granite pedestal. His chest is decorated with military awards. He holds his cloak with his left hand and clutches a naked sword in his right."
