"It's wonderful to see such a beautiful monument. And in Surgut, the oil capital of Russia, such a monument is a tribute to all those who discovered and extracted black gold.

The sculpture, created at the initiative of Surgutneftegaz, depicts an oil rig with five jets of oil. Eleven bronze figures stand in the center of the sculpture, representing various professions: a geologist, a surveyor, an electrician, drillers, an engineer, a builder, a driver, a cook, an oil and gas production operator, and a welder. The inscription, "To the labor feat of generations of Surgutneftegaz oil workers," shines in gold letters on the radial platform.

"A good, kind monument. Many moments from life. It is clear that images were used. And it makes me very happy that they did not build the NEFTYANIK Culture Center on this site. Few people know that the initiator of the construction termination was the former UVSING NU - V.B.Lukinykh. He was not afraid to invite V.L.Bogdanov to the beginning construction site, where everything was cancelled at the pile level. I think this monument "secured" the place and this park and green area for locals and residents of Surgut will always remain here."

The Symbolism of the Monument

The Monument to Oil Workers in Surgut is more than just a sculpture; it's a profound tribute to the region's identity. At its core is a towering oil rig, a stark representation of the industry that built Surgut. This structure is clad in polished granite and features five jets of oil, symbolizing the wealth and power derived from this resource. The inscription, "To the labor feat of generations of Surgutneftegaz oil workers," clearly states its purpose: honoring the immense effort and dedication of those who extract the 'black gold'. TikTok

Surrounding the central rig are eleven bronze figures, each meticulously crafted to represent a different profession crucial to the oil industry. From geologists and surveyors to drillers, engineers, and even cooks and drivers, these figures highlight the diverse and collaborative nature of this demanding work. This detail is particularly appreciated by those with backgrounds in these fields, who see a genuine reflection of their own experiences. Reddit

Adding a layer of emotional depth is the white marble sculpture of a mother and child nestled within the main structure. This element is interpreted as a symbol of maternal love and the nurturing spirit of the North, suggesting that the prosperity brought by oil also supports families and communities. It’s a reminder that behind the industrial might are human lives and enduring values. TikTok

Artistic Vision and Creation

The Monument to Oil Workers was a significant undertaking, brought to life by the "Unity" sculpting collective, with A. I. Tyutnev credited as a key sculptor. Its creation was initiated by Surgutneftegaz, a major player in the region's oil industry, underscoring the monument's importance as a corporate and civic statement. The monument was officially opened on September 5, 2016, marking a specific moment of dedication to the region's heritage. Reddit

Visitors often remark on the monument's unusual design and the initial intrigue it sparks. The abstract representation of oil extraction, combined with the detailed human figures, creates a unique visual experience. Some find the meaning isn't immediately obvious, but upon closer inspection of the various elements, they begin to appreciate the sculptor's intent and the complex ideas conveyed. Reddit

Interestingly, the site where the monument now stands was once considered for the NEFTYANIK Culture Center. The preservation of this space for the monument and the surrounding park is attributed to the foresight of individuals like V.B. Lukinykh, who ensured that this area would remain a public green space for the enjoyment of Surgut's residents. This decision highlights the value placed on public art and recreational areas in the city. Reddit
