Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently awestruck by the stunning, fairytale-like exterior of Saint Basil's Cathedral, calling it an absolute must-see in Moscow. The vibrant colors and unique architecture make it a photographer's paradise. While the interior is less grand than the outside, it offers a fascinating glimpse into historical chapels and religious art.

"Nice 👍"

Rajesh Gawari

"A more recent monastery from 1923, among the other monasteries in Suzdal this is probably the smaller."

Dracelina

"A small functioning monastery. It looks very beautiful from the outside. Inside, it's 50/50. Some of the buildings are in good condition, while others need urgent restoration. But the architecture itself is very interesting: if you put it in order, you won't be able to take your eyes off it. I was struck by a real wattle fence, the kind they used to put up in the old days and which you can't see anywhere now. A neat little garden, apparently as part of the monastery's self-sufficiency. The masonry of the wall is the same age as the monastery - the 18th century."

The Iconic Exterior: A Feast for the Eyes

The Saint Basil's Cathedral (officially the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed) is an architectural marvel that immediately captures the imagination. Its most striking feature is the collection of vibrant, multi-colored onion domes, each uniquely patterned and shaped. These domes, added over time, contribute to the cathedral's fairytale-like appearance. The exterior walls are adorned with intricate details, creating a dazzling mosaic of colors and textures that make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Instagram+2

Visitors often spend a significant amount of time simply walking around the cathedral, admiring its complex structure from various angles. The sheer artistry and the bold use of color are what draw so many photographers and tourists. It's a testament to the unique style of Russian architecture, blending Byzantine, Gothic, and Tatar influences into something entirely its own. Instagram+1

For the best photographic opportunities, aim for the golden hours around sunrise and sunset when the light casts a warm glow on the cathedral's facade. Red Square itself offers the most classic vantage points, but exploring the surrounding areas can reveal hidden gems and unique perspectives. Instagram

Inside Saint Basil's: A Labyrinth of Chapels

While the exterior is undeniably spectacular, stepping inside Saint Basil's Cathedral reveals a surprisingly complex and intimate space. The interior is not a single grand hall but rather a labyrinth of nine smaller chapels, each dedicated to a different saint or feast day. These chapels are connected by narrow passageways and staircases, creating a sense of discovery as you move through the building. Instagram

Each chapel boasts its own unique frescoes, icons, and religious artwork. The walls are often covered in detailed paintings that tell biblical stories and depict the lives of saints. The atmosphere inside is often described as serene and spiritual, offering a stark contrast to the bustling Red Square outside. Instagram

Exploring the interior provides a deeper understanding of the cathedral's religious significance and its historical context. It's a chance to appreciate the detailed craftsmanship and the devotion that went into creating this sacred space. Remember to dress modestly, as it is still a place of worship. Reddit

The History and Legends

The history of Saint Basil's Cathedral is as rich and colorful as its exterior. Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in the mid-16th century, its construction was a monumental undertaking to commemorate the successful siege of Kazan. The original name was the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, after a revered Russian saint buried on the site. Instagram+1

One of the most enduring legends surrounding the cathedral is that Ivan the Terrible had the architects, Barma and Postnik Yakovlev, blinded after its completion to ensure they could never create anything as beautiful again. However, historical records suggest Postnik Yakovlev went on to design other significant structures, casting doubt on this tale. Instagram

Over the centuries, the cathedral has faced numerous threats, including fires and attempts to demolish it during the Soviet era. Fortunately, its unique architectural and cultural value led to its preservation, and it now stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a powerful symbol of Russia's heritage. Instagram
