What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Assumption Cathedral for its magnificent restoration, particularly the grand bell tower. The exterior beauty and architectural style are frequently highlighted. However, some recent reviews mention ongoing interior restoration, which can temporarily limit access and viewing opportunities.
"The skillfully restored Holy Assumption Cathedral of the Tula Kremlin. The newly restored bell tower of the cathedral surprised me with its grandeur. The bell tower was restored in 2015 to City Day. Initially, the bell tower was damaged by fire and was later dismantled by the Communists."

"The Dormition Cathedral is an Orthodox cathedral in the Tula Kremlin, built in the Russian Baroque style. It is one of the latest examples of the large cathedrals erected in the major cities of Muscovite Rus'.
A wooden cathedral, known as the Archangel Cathedral, was originally built in the Kremlin in 1626. The first stone Dormition Cathedral, with side chapels dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel and Tikhon of Amathus, was erected in the 1670s and 1680s. Less than a hundred years later, it had fallen into disrepair and was dismantled. Construction of the new cathedral began on May 7, 1762, with the blessing of Bishop Porfiry of Kolomna and Kashira, using funds from Tula merchants "from drinking dues in the form of levies." Approximately 30,000 rubles were spent on the construction and decoration of the cathedral. The main builder of the cathedral was the merchant Lukyan Kopteltsev, along with Sofron Sidnev and Andrei Volodimirov. The building was completed in two years, by May 8, 1764. At this time, Lukyan Kopteltsev died, and burgomaster Timofey Chechulin was appointed in his place.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1766, and a year later, the chapel of St. John Chrysostom, built on its right side, was also consecrated. However, after the bishop's see was transferred to Tula, this chapel was abolished due to overcrowding, and the cathedral sacristy was established in its place. The Dormition Cathedral was a cold, unheated church, and services were held there only between Easter and the Feast of the Intercession."

"The Assumption Cathedral was built on the territory of the Tula Kremlin in 1762-1766. In 2012-2015, the cathedral was restored, the bell tower destroyed by the Bolsheviks was recreated. Now the cathedral looks magnificent, both externally and in its interior decoration!"
