Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Ivan Goncharov House Museum for its rich exposition on the famous writer, particularly highlighting the thematic halls and the use of quotes from his works. The iconic watchtower and its clock mechanism are also noted as significant attractions. However, some guests have reported negative experiences with museum staff, citing rudeness and unhelpfulness, which detracted from their overall visit.

"This is a homeplace of Ivan Goncharov, the famous Russian novelist. In addition to the rooms where he lived and worked, this large museum contains the exposition devoted to his liaisons with France, Japan and other countries. This historical building is also famous for its watchtower, being a vivid symbol of Ulyanovsk, traditionally a place of romantic dates. You can visit a special room inside the museum, where you can take a look at the watch's ancient mechanism. Mark this place as the 'must see' in Ulyanovsk."

"This a clock Tower"

"The staff was disgusting! We arrived from out of town and decided to take a tour, but no one offered us a guide. In the first room, a woman was still talking about the house, explaining that there were TVs where you could watch short films about a particular room. It turned out she was the only one telling the story. We then wandered through the rooms in complete silence and were about to go back to ask why we'd paid 600 rubles just to "show around the house," but that wasn't what we were expecting. In the clock room, there was a very rude, insolent woman who simply stood in the doorway, ignoring us. I saw the remote control on the windowsill, picked it up, and started the movie myself (no one had told us not to touch the remotes or that only the room's caretaker was supposed to do that). The woman snatched the remote control from the windowsill as if we'd committed a crime and hid it somewhere. We noticed but didn't say anything (we didn't want to disturb the silence we'd been maintaining throughout the tour). Then my friend and I had a conversation about the clock mechanism in the room (she assumed the tower was a fake), and the woman overheard our conversation and, with the phrase "What are you making this up? What a fake!", practically started yelling at us. It was a very unpleasant conversation, as we could have simply explained without the hysterics or remained silent altogether. We were about to leave because she simply disappeared somewhere, and we thought the tour was over. When we went down to the first floor, one of the women asked, "I don't understand, where did those two go? Come back up." Honestly, we had no desire to continue looking at the house because it was completely unclear who the people in the photographs on the walls were, and we especially didn't want to use the television. Dear museum staff, I understand that everyone's mood varies, but please don't take it out on visitors (who, as I understand, don't frequent your museum). Otherwise, I can't explain your attitude, as if you don't know how to communicate with people. Thank you very much for the opportunity to see how the great writer Goncharov lived—it's a very beautiful house, but we won't be returning."
