What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Resurrection Cathedral for its stunning Baroque architecture and the high-quality, vibrant restoration of its interior. The newly painted murals are particularly noted for their bright, accessible biblical storytelling. While some regret the loss of original interiors, the current artistic execution is widely admired, creating a beautiful and uplifting spiritual space.
"It was built in 1772-1776 in the Baroque style. In 1938, the cathedral was closed and an art gallery operated there. The historical interior decoration and murals were lost. Now the cathedral has been completely restored. Of course, both the iconostasis and the paintings were done quite recently. But how well and originally it was done. With amazing kindness, as if you were traveling through the pages of a children's Bible. Bright, light and understandable plots and scenes, faces of saints, images of monasteries of the Vologda land, a lot of interesting things. Just be sure to visit this wonderful cathedral. Such beauty will definitely not be forgotten."

"In the 70s of the last century, I happened to visit this Temple when it was an Art Gallery. I thought it would never be rebuilt. Thank God, I was wrong.
Of course, both the iconostasis and the paintings were done anew: even the painting style suggests this, but very high quality and in the Baroque style. The prayer hall is well lit, including due to the round windows under the dome placed in a circle; a very beautifully organized space.
The restoration is not finished yet: in some places in the interior you can stumble upon scaffolding. The girl from the candle shop says that this is the ongoing painting of the Temple.
A YEAR LATER
This time, the entire territory adjacent to the Kremlin is fenced off, and you have to get to the Temple by roundabout ways, past the fence on which a huge arrow and the inscription "Entrance to the Temple" are painted. The entrance is now organized through the Lower Temple, then through a gallery-passage you get to the stairs leading to the Upper Temple. All restoration and painting works, thank God, are completed. The result is pleasing."

The Baroque Masterpiece: Architecture and Restoration
Fortunately, the cathedral has undergone a comprehensive restoration. While the original artwork is gone, the new iconostasis and paintings have been created in a high-quality Baroque style. These new artworks are noted for their bright, light, and understandable depictions of biblical scenes, making them accessible even to children. The restoration has aimed to recreate a beautiful and spiritually uplifting space.
Visitors may still encounter signs of ongoing work, such as scaffolding in some areas, indicating that the restoration process is a continuous effort. The cathedral's transformation from an art gallery back into a functioning place of worship is a testament to its cultural and religious significance.
Experiencing the Interior: Art and Atmosphere
The prayer hall is noted for being well-lit, partly due to the distinctive round windows positioned in a circle beneath the dome. This architectural feature contributes to a beautifully organized and airy space. The overall atmosphere is one of light and spiritual upliftment, a stark contrast to its past as a closed-off gallery.
While the original historical interior is lost, the quality of the new work is consistently praised. It offers a unique artistic experience that is both visually appealing and spiritually resonant. The combination of Baroque architecture and contemporary, yet stylistically appropriate, religious art creates a memorable visit.
