"Vorkuta is a city founded in the 1930s. It used to be a Gulag labor camp, where prisoners were forced to mine coal during Joseph Stalin's rule.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, many mines were eventually closed. The miners lost their jobs and ended up unemployed.
They left Vorkuta and the Arctic zone in general. According to The World news site, an estimated 1 million people have left.
Eventually the city became deserted and only a few people remained. There are about 100 apartments still inhabited."
