Visitors appreciate the engaging guided tours, particularly those led by knowledgeable guides, and the historical exhibitions housed within the Powder Magazine and casemates. "Medieval bastion. The only surviving bastion of the Horned Fortress, it was built in 1579-1580. The Hermitage-Vyborg Museum is located on its foundation. The powder magazine at the base of the bastion was built after the conquest of Vyborg by Russian troops in 1710. Up until the 19th century, the magazine was used to store ammunition. Currently, the Powder Magazine houses an archeology museum with an interesting exhibition."

"I would like to express my deep gratitude to our tour guide Elena Viktorovna for the most interesting excursion to the Panzerlaks bastion, for her artistry and professionalism, which allowed us to immerse ourselves in the era of medieval Vyborg, for the inclusion of interactive elements that will undoubtedly be remembered by both children and adults!"

Екатерина Сысоева

"Panzerlax is a medieval bastion in Vyborg. The only surviving bastion of the Horned Fortress. The bastion was erected in 1579-1580 as the most important element in the system of fortifications. The outlines of the new fortifications resembled the horns of an animal, so the fortress attached to the Stone City began to be called Horned. And the “horn” that defended the right flank of the fortress was called Panzerlax (Swedish: “Shell (shield) of the bay”). Six loopholes located in three tiers were intended for firing along the southeastern curtain of the fortress. Under Empress Catherine II, the bastion was repaired. In 1782, a new powder magazine was added to the fortifications. Later, with the growth of the city, the bastion gradually lost its defensive significance. Since 2010, the Hermitage-Vyborg Museum Center has been housed in the building of the museum and art school, and the premises of the bastion have also been transferred for its exhibitions. Since 2013, the powder magazine has housed an exhibition dedicated to urban archeology, and since 2018, the casemate in the left flank of the bastion has also been open to visitors as a museum object."

The History of Bastion Panzerlax

Bastion Panzerlax stands as the sole surviving remnant of the formidable Horned Fortress, erected between 1579 and 1580. Its strategic design, with six loopholes arranged in three tiers, was crucial for defending the southeastern curtain of the fortress. The fortress itself earned its name, Horned Fortress, from the distinctive horn-like shape of its fortifications. The bastion, named Panzerlax (meaning 'Shell (shield) of the bay' in Swedish), was a vital component of Vyborg's medieval defenses. Reddit

Over centuries, the bastion underwent modifications. Under Empress Catherine II, repairs were made, and in 1782, a new powder magazine was added at its base. As Vyborg grew, the bastion's military significance waned. Today, its historical structures serve a new purpose, housing parts of the Hermitage-Vyborg Museum Center, preserving and showcasing the region's rich past. Reddit
