What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently impressed by the Assumption Cathedral's immense scale and beautiful riverside location. While its modern reconstruction sparks discussion, its grandeur and historical significance as a spiritual center are widely appreciated. Some note the ongoing interior decoration.
"We took a bus to explore the city, and the first stop was the local Kremlin.
From a distance, you can see the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
This was once the oldest church in the city, founded in 1215 by Prince Konstantin Vsevolodovich of Rostov on the territory of the Yaroslavl Kremlin (the Rubleny Gorod) and consecrated in 1219 in honor of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, becoming the main church of Yaroslavl.
The first stone cathedral, built of brick with white stone carvings and majolica floors, was destroyed by fire in 1501.
In 1516, a new cathedral was erected, resembling the Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin, but it became dilapidated by the 17th century, and in 1646, a five-domed cathedral with a 55-meter-high bell tower was built, which was repeatedly damaged by fires. It was restored again, retaining its Byzantine features.
In 1612, it was here that Metropolitan Kirill blessed Minin and Pozharsky on their campaign to liberate Moscow.
In 1613, the young Tsar Mikhail Romanov was welcomed here.
Since 1788, the cathedral has been the seat of the bishop.
It is adorned with a five-tiered iconostasis and frescoes, including the miraculous Yaroslavl Icon of the Mother of God.
In 1918, the church was damaged by shelling, and in 1937, it was blown up and replaced by a park.
The church was restored in 2004-2010 using funds from philanthropists, and it became an exceptionally large structure: 50 meters high, 2,000 square meters in size, and capable of accommodating 4,000 people.
The interior of the cathedral is still being decorated.
The uniqueness of the cathedral lies in its role as a spiritual center, its connection to key historical events (the Time of Troubles and the Romanov dynasty), and the ongoing debates (and controversies) surrounding its modern appearance, which has been criticized for deviating from its original architecture.
Overall, the cathedral is very impressive, as is the surrounding area. It is beautifully, solemnly, and harmoniously designed.
Afterward, we explored the sculptural composition "Three Angels," followed by a large stone that is said to be 2 million years old, where you can make wishes by touching it. Temple and stone"

"Didn’t actually go inside, just walked past as we strolled along the Volga and Kotorosl River, which is a lovely walk high above the rivers. The Church is actually new construction, replacing an earlier church (destroyed by Soviets in 1930s)."

"The view of the roof from below is absolutely beautiful, it's symmetry an grandeur is breathtaking."
