"This is a restored copy. There used to be a parade ground here, then Demidov Square was built in its place. In the center of the square in 1830 a monument to Demidov was erected. He did a lot for the city, including opening the first higher education institution, the Demidov School. After the revolution the monument was torn down, they wanted to melt it down, but it turned out that it was brick, just covered with copper sheet on the outside. In 2005 the column was restored..."

"The Demidov Column in Yaroslavl is a monument to Pavel Grigorievich Demidov, the founder of the Yaroslavl Demidov School of Higher Sciences. It was erected on the Parade Square in Yaroslavl using funds from city residents and other voluntary donors. It was opened on March 6 (18), 1829. It was a Doric bronze column (filled with sand inside) 12 meters high on a granite pedestal, with a bronze celestial sphere and a gilded soaring double-headed eagle on top."

The Story Behind the Pillar
Tragically, the original bronze column was dismantled after the revolution. There was even an attempt to melt it down, but it was discovered to be a brick structure clad in copper. This discovery likely saved it from complete destruction. The restoration efforts in 2005 aimed to recreate the grandeur of the original, though some visitors note it's now a concrete pillar painted to resemble metal, a point of sadness for some.
Despite the changes, the pillar remains a symbol of Yaroslavl's past and its commitment to education. It serves as a reminder of the city's heritage and the individuals who shaped its development. Visiting the pillar offers a chance to connect with this history and appreciate the efforts made to preserve it.
