What's Sakhalin like? It is worth visiting in your opinion? Answers particularly welcome from people who live/have lived there.
I'm 63 and have been intrigued this island since I was 11, when it was the setting for a boys adventure book. Also, I know there were prison colonies on Sakhalin which Chekhov wrote about. Is this still the case?

Any one here ever been to the island of Sakhalin?
What was it like? Did people look Japanese or Russian ?
Is Sakhalin worth a visit for tourism and do many people speak English?
Want to do a holiday to Russia in the future (when I’m able to fly there) and looking for options. Want some cultural experiences, scenery and good food/restaurants.

Cape Velikan on the island of Sakhalin, Russia
It took us about two and a half hours to get to this cape on the east coast of Sakhalin from the main city, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Nearly an hour and a half of that was done on dirt roads that were pretty rough in areas. The way was not well marked at all, and we almost got lost…

"Good"
Mahmoud Daghlas
"I used it to catch a night train.
I also just popped in whenever I wanted because it was cold outside. There's an ATM, a convenience store and a cafe. Many stores are open until around 10pm.
There are toilets in the basement, which I think require payment but when I went there was no one there and I was able to use them for free. There was a sign that said 20 rubles.
The entrance is on the left side of the door and the exit is on the right. Go through baggage inspection and a metal detector to enter.
When you get off the train, you can also exit from the underground passage entrance on the left side of the building."

"I haven't been inside. We bought a ticket at the bus station. I liked the dog made of hay and the monument is located nearby. It is dedicated to Neftegorsk."
