Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the stunning rainforest scenery and the rewarding waterfall at the end of the Enbas Saut Waterfall Trail. However, the challenging access road requiring a 4x4 and the muddy, step-filled trail are significant hurdles for many. Hiring a guide is frequently recommended for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

"We did this as a guided tour and very glad as the route to start is barely driveable! We were in a 4x4pickup. Very interesting driving up through villages as well. Don't even think about doing it in a 2WD. The rainforest was spectacular, the path is stepped but very muddy/ slidey in places. Our guide used a machete to hack through some fallen foliage. Definitely wear good trail shoes/boots and take lots of water, humid and harder work than distance suggests! And use a guide...."

"Used maps.me to get here at the end of November. Drove Jimny 4x4 and it was much needed. Raining on and off. Forgot my boots so did the hike in flip flops. Honestly if you’ve hiked before it’s pretty easy. A little strenuous coming back up but nothing too crazy. Lots of crabs everywhere. The drive through the 2 towns you will be flagged down, just keep going unless you maybe want a local with you. It’s a bit sketchy if you think about it, going to a place in the middle of nowhere. We were fine though. There seems to be some people who have had issues. We left zero valuable and even left door unlocked to avoid a broken window. As there’s a review 3 days ago that this happened. Recommend this hike if you’re feeling adventurous."

"Really great trail with amazing foliage throughout and a nice little water feature at the end. A lot of stairs up and down, strenuous but not difficult when it was dry; Might be tricky in the rain (the same might be said for the end of the road which is unpaved and a bit bumpy). Some reviews talk about it being difficult to find but with maps_me we had no trouble at all. There are signs indicating the way and there was a large concrete slab on the road next to a brown cabin where the first set of stairs begin. Very quiet on Sunday in the offseason."

The over 2000 steps and potentially muddy and slippery conditions require good stamina and careful footing. Reddit+1 If your family enjoys adventurous hikes and your children are older and accustomed to strenuous activity, it can be a rewarding experience.

The Enbas Saut Waterfall Trail Experience

The Enbas Saut Waterfall Trail is an adventure for those seeking a more rugged and immersive experience in St. Lucia's National Rain Forest Reserve. It's not for the faint of heart, primarily due to the challenging access and the trail's demanding nature. The journey begins with a drive on an unpaved, often rough road that necessitates a 4x4 vehicle. Many visitors find this drive daunting and strongly advise against attempting it in a standard car. Reddit+1

The trail itself is characterized by over 2000 steps, creating a significant descent and subsequent ascent. The rainforest environment means the path can become extremely muddy and slippery, especially after rainfall. This makes sturdy, waterproof hiking boots an absolute necessity. Travelers often describe the hike as harder work than its distance might suggest, emphasizing the need for ample water and a good level of fitness. Reddit+1

Despite the challenges, the reward is a secluded and beautiful waterfall, offering a tranquil spot to relax and enjoy nature. The lush foliage and vibrant biodiversity of the rainforest create a spectacular backdrop throughout the hike. Many visitors appreciate the solitude, often finding themselves alone on the trail, which enhances the feeling of discovery. Reddit+1 Hiring a local guide is a recurring recommendation, not only for navigation but also for safety and to gain insights into the local flora and fauna. Reddit+1

Navigating to the Trailhead

Reaching the Enbas Saut Waterfall Trailhead is often cited as one of the most significant hurdles for visitors. The 'road' leading to the trail is more of a rugged track, making a 4x4 vehicle essential. Travelers have shared experiences of using offline maps like maps.me or even Apple Maps, finding them more reliable than Google Maps for this specific route. Reddit+1

Beyond the vehicle requirement, the remoteness and condition of the road can be unnerving. Some visitors have expressed concerns about safety, with anecdotal evidence of car break-ins. This has led to advice such as leaving valuables behind or even leaving car doors unlocked as a deterrent. Reddit For these reasons, many strongly advocate for hiring a local guide. Guides not only help navigate the tricky terrain but also provide a sense of security and local knowledge, making the journey to the trailhead much smoother and less stressful. Reddit+1

When you do arrive at the vicinity of the trailhead, look for signs and a large concrete slab next to a brown cabin, which marks the beginning of the first set of stairs. However, even with these markers, the journey can be disorienting, underscoring the value of local expertise. Reddit
