What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the thrilling adventure activities like quad biking and buggy rides, and the stunning natural beauty of the red sand dunes, especially during sunset. However, some caution is advised regarding safety on the dunes, with mentions of hidden hazards and the importance of careful driving.
"This is a great place to enjoy the weekend. I also went there on 8/6/25 with my group of friends. We rented 5 bikes and rode across the red sand dunes.
Unfortunately, one of the bikes met with an accident on a sand hill trap. My friend narrowly escaped, but he suffered a major shoulder injury — his shoulder bone was fractured in the accident.
There was no help available in the middle of the desert. We all came together to support him. One bike carried the injured friend, and we had to leave the damaged bike behind.
Thankfully, after hospital treatment and surgery, he is now okay and will need 1 month of rest.
To everyone planning to visit and enjoy the red sands: please be careful. Dangerous spots are hidden in the sand hills. Go slow, enjoy the ride, and take in the experience. On your second visit, use your skills — not just power. Power without control can take away your happiness.
Thanks for reading."

"I’ve visited the Red Sand a couple of times during winter in 🇸🇦 perfect for offroading, sandboarding.
But a heads up: don’t go in the summer! It gets extremely hot, and there are no stores, no shade, and no toilets around. Make sure to bring your own food, water, and anything else you need to stay comfortable. Best enjoyed in cooler months between November to April"

Yes, guided tours are available and highly recommended for first-time visitors. They often include transportation, safety briefings, and equipment for activities like quad biking.
You can drive your own car to the main areas, but be mindful of the sand conditions. If you plan on venturing off the main tracks or into softer sand, a 4x4 is advisable. Some areas might require higher clearance.

🎫 🧭 Onsite Experience
Popular activities include quad biking, buggy driving, sandboarding, camel rides, horse riding, and 4x4 off-roading. It's also a fantastic spot for photography and enjoying desert sunsets.
These activities are thrilling but carry risks. Always wear a helmet, follow the guide's instructions, and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid dangerous maneuvers and hidden sand traps.

📸 📸 Photography
The golden hours, just after sunrise and before sunset, offer the most dramatic lighting. The low-angle sun casts long shadows and enhances the red hues of the sand.
A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the vast desert landscapes. A telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details or distant shots. Protect your gear from sand with a dust cover or bag.
The crests of the larger dunes offer panoramic views. Look for interesting patterns in the sand created by the wind, or capture the silhouettes of vehicles and people against the sky.
Use a camera bag, keep lenses covered when not in use, and avoid changing lenses in windy conditions. A blower brush can help remove loose sand.
Action shots of quad biking and dune bashing are popular. Landscape shots showcasing the vastness and color of the dunes, as well as portraits with the desert as a backdrop, are also common.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Weekdays might offer a less crowded and more relaxed experience for families. If planning a visit on a weekend, aim for earlier in the day to avoid the peak crowds and the most intense heat. The vast open space allows kids to run around and explore safely, provided they are supervised closely.
🚗 Adventure Seekers & Off-Roaders
Consider booking a guided tour for a more structured and potentially safer adventure, especially if you're new to desert off-roading. These tours often include safety equipment and expert guidance. Remember to pack extra water and snacks, as you might venture further out than anticipated.

Capture the action of quad biking and dune buggy rides, or focus on the serene beauty of the dunes at sunrise and sunset. Adventure Activities on the Dunes
When engaging in these activities, safety is paramount. Ensure you receive a proper briefing, wear protective gear like helmets, and stay within designated areas. As one reviewer noted, 'Power without control can take away your happiness,' highlighting the importance of skill and caution over speed. Always be aware of your surroundings, as hidden sand traps can pose a risk. For those with their own off-road vehicles, exploring further afield is possible, but always prioritize safety and responsible driving practices.
Many visitors combine these activities with desert camping. The vast, open landscape provides a unique backdrop for an overnight stay. Remember to pack all necessary supplies, including food, water, and camping gear, as facilities are minimal. Enjoying a BBQ under the stars or waking up to the desert sunrise is an unforgettable experience.
Capturing the Desert's Beauty: Photography Tips
When shooting, a wide-angle lens is excellent for capturing the expansive desert vistas, while a telephoto lens can be useful for isolating details or distant subjects. Be mindful of the sand; it can be a photographer's nemesis. Use a camera bag, keep lenses covered when not in use, and consider a blower brush for cleaning. Avoid changing lenses in windy conditions to minimize sand ingress.
Popular photographic subjects include the dynamic patterns etched into the sand by the wind, the silhouettes of off-road vehicles or riders against the sky, and candid shots of people enjoying the landscape. Whether you're capturing the thrill of quad biking or the serene beauty of a desert sunset, the Red Sand Dunes provide endless opportunities for memorable images.
Safety and Preparedness
Beyond vehicle safety, personal preparedness is key. The desert climate can be harsh, so carrying plenty of water and wearing sunscreen and appropriate clothing is vital. Mobile service can be unreliable in certain spots, so it's wise to inform someone of your plans before heading out.
Most importantly, be aware of the terrain. Reviewers have warned about hidden sand traps and the potential for accidents, emphasizing that 'power without control can take away your happiness'. It's recommended to go slow, especially on your first visit, and use your skills rather than just brute force. If an accident does occur, help might not be immediately available, so self-reliance and caution are crucial.
