"During the defense of Sevastopol, most of the dead were taken to the North Side,
where at the end of September 1854, on the instructions of the head of defense, Vice Admiral
V. A. Kornilov created three cemeteries near the Northern fortification.
Cemeteries had sections where sailors, sappers, artillerymen, and infantrymen were buried by regiment. Subsequently, they grew and began to be perceived as one, which was originally called Petropavlovsk.
Russian soldiers who fell during the Crimean War and sailors who defended Crimea who died defending the city in the Second World War of the 20th century.
There are 472 mass graves here,
each contains hundreds of nameless people buried
“lower ranks”, as well as 130 individual burials of officers and generals.
