"Carpaccio Square is named after the famous Italian painter V. Carpaccio. His house from the 14th century stands next to the square. Famous buildings in this part include the Taverna, the fountain, the Column of St. Justine and the Almerigotti Palace. The Taverna is a former salt warehouse, which was also called the Warehouse of St. Mark. The Taverna probably stood at the beginning of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, salt production began to decline and large salt warehouses became unnecessary. The Taverna was thus converted and used as a fish market, shops, warehouses, a guesthouse and more. The exterior of the building did not undergo any major changes. When new shops moved in, only interventions were needed on the interior. In 2004, they began a thorough renovation of the Taverna. It was given a new purpose and almost completely emptied. Today, it is a venue for Koper events and celebrations. The Column of St. Justine once stood by the sea next to the salt warehouse. It was built in honor of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571."
