What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Pletna boat experience to Bled Island is a quintessential Lake Bled activity, praised for its scenic beauty and traditional charm. While some find the cost and limited time on the island a drawback, many appreciate the unique journey and the iconic views. The island's wishing bell and church are popular highlights.
"Would I do the trip again knowing what I know? Probably not. Would I recommend to a friend? Probably not.
There is not much to the boat trip over. It takes 25 minutes to get to the island. The “captain” of our boat did not say one thing to us on the row over or back. He could have made it very entertaining by telling tales of the island and lake - he didn’t. In fact, my wife asked him how many trips he does in a day and his response was “as few as possible.”
The island has few things to see on it. All have additional charges to get in. My wife and I walked around the island twice and then waited for the boat to take us back. You ave 1 hour on the island. Is it with the 20€ to go over and see it? Probably not. That would be your call. We would probably not.
If you found my review helpful let me know by giving me a ❤️"

"I think it is a must do while being at the lake, the landscape is so beautiful. Boat charge 20€ per adult and 10€ per kid. You can leave stroller or other big items there before boarding the boat."

"definitely worth a visit if you want to spend some quality time around the picturesque bled island. we went at the start of may so i’m guessing just before tourist season, the price for the boat was €20 pp. you get a ride to the island and back and are given around 1hr on the island to explore. that was more than enough time for us. there is a cafe on the island as well as a tower that you need to pay for entry (only €5).
fyi when you arrive at the location, there wasn’t a stand with information so you wait for the pletna boat to arrive from its cruise and pay on the boat. the wait isn’t too long.
i’d highly recommend the experience. i’d say being on the pletna boat was more fun than the island for me."

The History and Craft of Pletna Boats
Today, the tradition is maintained by a guild of oarsmen, known as 'pletnarji'. These oarsmen use a unique standing rowing technique with two oars, propelling the boat with skill and grace. This method requires significant strength and practice, ensuring that the tradition continues to be a respected craft. Riding a Pletna is not just about reaching the island; it's about experiencing a centuries-old tradition and appreciating the dedication of the oarsmen who keep it alive. Many visitors find the journey itself to be a highlight, appreciating the peacefulness and the connection to history.
While the experience is undeniably charming, it's worth noting that the Pletna boats are a popular tourist attraction. This means they can get busy, especially during peak season. Some travelers have noted that the oarsmen may not engage in extensive storytelling, focusing more on the practicalities of the journey. However, the sheer beauty of the ride and the iconic imagery it provides make it a must-do for many visiting Lake Bled.
Exploring Bled Island: Beyond the Boat Ride
Beyond the wishing bell, the church offers more to explore. Visitors can climb the bell tower, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Bled, the surrounding Julian Alps, and the distant Bled Castle. This climb is often highlighted as a rewarding experience, offering a unique perspective of the stunning landscape. While the church and tower are the primary draws, the island also features a small cafe where you can relax and enjoy refreshments. The overall ambiance of the island is one of tranquility and natural beauty, making it a peaceful escape from the mainland.
It's important for visitors to be aware of the time constraints. The typical hour allocated on the island is usually sufficient for exploring the church, ringing the bell, and enjoying the views. However, if you plan to linger or fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere, it's good to be mindful of the return boat schedule. Some reviews suggest that the island's offerings might be limited for those expecting extensive activities, but for most, the charm lies in its simplicity and iconic status.
