Best day ever in Lake Bled. I finally got to swim in the lake, rode an alpine coaster with views of the lake, took a boat to the island in the lake, and watched a gorgeous sunset. One of the best things to do in Bled, Slovenia, is to take one of these pletna boats out to the island in the middle of the lake! There are lots of launching points around the lake, and they take 15 - 25 minutes to get to the island, depending on where you start (it’s closer from Vila Bled than from the eastern side of the lake), then spend 45 min on the island. The ride costs 15€ per person and...

The vibe in Bled is unmatched! 😍😍 💡You can ride on the lake and to the island in various ways, also on a traditional boat called pletna. Pletna boats are made by locals and are typical of Bled. Their origins date back to 1590. You should be able to recognize it from afar as it is equipped with a colourful awning which protects passengers from the sun and other weather conditions. Reviews Summary

The Pletna boat experience to Bled Island is a quintessential Lake Bled activity, praised for its scenic beauty and traditional charm. While some find the cost and limited time on the island a drawback, many appreciate the unique journey and the iconic views. The island's wishing bell and church are popular highlights.

"Would I do the trip again knowing what I know? Probably not. Would I recommend to a friend? Probably not.

There is not much to the boat trip over. It takes 25 minutes to get to the island. The “captain” of our boat did not say one thing to us on the row over or back. He could have made it very entertaining by telling tales of the island and lake - he didn’t. In fact, my wife asked him how many trips he does in a day and his response was “as few as possible.”

The island has few things to see on it. All have additional charges to get in. My wife and I walked around the island twice and then waited for the boat to take us back. You ave 1 hour on the island. Is it with the 20€ to go over and see it? Probably not. That would be your call. We would probably not.

If you found my review helpful let me know by giving me a ❤️"

"I think it is a must do while being at the lake, the landscape is so beautiful. Boat charge 20€ per adult and 10€ per kid. You can leave stroller or other big items there before boarding the boat."

"definitely worth a visit if you want to spend some quality time around the picturesque bled island. we went at the start of may so i’m guessing just before tourist season, the price for the boat was €20 pp. you get a ride to the island and back and are given around 1hr on the island to explore. that was more than enough time for us. there is a cafe on the island as well as a tower that you need to pay for entry (only €5).
fyi when you arrive at the location, there wasn’t a stand with information so you wait for the pletna boat to arrive from its cruise and pay on the boat. the wait isn’t too long.
i’d highly recommend the experience. i’d say being on the pletna boat was more fun than the island for me."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History and Craft of Pletna Boats

The Pletna boats are more than just a mode of transport; they are a living piece of Lake Bled's heritage. These traditional wooden boats have been ferrying visitors to Bled Island since at least the 16th century. Their origins are said to date back to 1590, making them a testament to enduring craftsmanship. Each Pletna is handcrafted by local boat builders, a skill passed down through generations. The distinctive flat-bottomed design, inspired by Venetian gondolas but with unique local adaptations, allows them to glide smoothly over the calm waters of the lake. The colorful awning, a signature feature, provides shade for passengers, adding to the picturesque scene. Instagram+2

Today, the tradition is maintained by a guild of oarsmen, known as 'pletnarji'. These oarsmen use a unique standing rowing technique with two oars, propelling the boat with skill and grace. This method requires significant strength and practice, ensuring that the tradition continues to be a respected craft. Riding a Pletna is not just about reaching the island; it's about experiencing a centuries-old tradition and appreciating the dedication of the oarsmen who keep it alive. Many visitors find the journey itself to be a highlight, appreciating the peacefulness and the connection to history. Instagram+1

While the experience is undeniably charming, it's worth noting that the Pletna boats are a popular tourist attraction. This means they can get busy, especially during peak season. Some travelers have noted that the oarsmen may not engage in extensive storytelling, focusing more on the practicalities of the journey. However, the sheer beauty of the ride and the iconic imagery it provides make it a must-do for many visiting Lake Bled. TikTokReddit

Exploring Bled Island: Beyond the Boat Ride

Upon arrival at Bled Island, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere and the iconic Assumption of Mary Church. The island itself is small, and the main attraction is the church, which has a history stretching back centuries. A significant tradition here is the ringing of the church bell, often referred to as the 'wishing bell'. Legend has it that if you ring the bell three times while making a wish, it will come true. This ritual adds a touch of magic and hope to the visit for many travelers. Instagram+1

Beyond the wishing bell, the church offers more to explore. Visitors can climb the bell tower, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Bled, the surrounding Julian Alps, and the distant Bled Castle. This climb is often highlighted as a rewarding experience, offering a unique perspective of the stunning landscape. Instagram+1 While the church and tower are the primary draws, the island also features a small cafe where you can relax and enjoy refreshments. The overall ambiance of the island is one of tranquility and natural beauty, making it a peaceful escape from the mainland. Reddit

It's important for visitors to be aware of the time constraints. The typical hour allocated on the island is usually sufficient for exploring the church, ringing the bell, and enjoying the views. However, if you plan to linger or fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere, it's good to be mindful of the return boat schedule. Some reviews suggest that the island's offerings might be limited for those expecting extensive activities, but for most, the charm lies in its simplicity and iconic status. Reddit
