"As new fans of Slovenian architecture, we sought out this church just outside Ljubljana and were completely captivated. St. Michael’s Church in Črna Vas is an absolute must-visit for anyone with an interest in architecture or design. Created by Slovenia’s master architect Jože Plečnik, this modest-looking church reveals its genius in the details.
The use of humble, local materials—wood, clay, stone—feels both grounded and visionary. Inside, the space opens into a beautifully serene interior, where the exposed wooden beams and Plečnik’s signature design language create an atmosphere that’s both sacred and strikingly modern. It’s a brilliant example of how architecture can harmonize with its landscape and local culture.
Not only is this a deeply spiritual place, but it’s also a living piece of Slovenia’s architectural heritage. A quiet, profound site that rewards close observation—especially for those who appreciate thoughtful, human-centered design.
Highly recommended as a short trip from Ljubljana, especially for fans of Plečnik or anyone passionate about 20th-century architecture."

"I had to go there for my curiosity on unique architecture. A bit outside Ljubljana, right beside the main road, stands this great looking church! There is a history behind it, but I guess you can get all that and other information on the internet."

"In a water canal 300 meters left of the church you can use a SUP to get to Ljubljanica river which is about 200 meters from the main road. And then enjoy about a hour long river ride to Špica in the Ljubljana city center. During Summer months, of course! The church itself is the only man made Unesco world heritage site that Slovenia has. It was done by the famous Jože Plečnik who basically did the entire Ljubljana city (bridge Tromostovje, park Kongresni trg, etc.)."
