Planning Your Visit

Navigating the Windswept Coast

Cape Point Lighthouse is exposed to strong winds and changing weather. Dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes for the uphill walk or funicular ride. Keep a close eye on your belongings, especially food, as baboons are common and bold visitors.

Timing Your Iconic Visit

To avoid the biggest crowds, aim for late afternoon visits, especially on weekdays. This often means fewer people on the narrow paths near the lighthouse and a more relaxed experience. Consider visiting during shoulder seasons for a quieter atmosphere.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking, iconic views from Cape Point Lighthouse and the thrill of spotting diverse wildlife like baboons and ostriches. The funicular ride is a popular convenience, though the walk and stairs are noted. Some find the lighthouse area itself can get crowded, and the weather is often windy and cold.

"Stunning views of the beautiful cape and surrounding water. It's not just notionally iconic (which it is), but it is lovely too. We saw wild ostriches and eland. Climb to the lighthouse for the best views (it's about a 20 minute walk uphill, but nothing too taxing)."

Laura Dickey

"You will be greeted by baboons straight away. They are not shy of people, so keep your belongings safe and don't wave any food around.

You can either hike up to the lighthouse or take the funicular ride up (pay extra).

There are amazing views at the lighthouse but it is very windy and cold as it is right on the coastline.

It can get crowded closer to the lighthouse as it is a narrow path but we end towards the end of the day and had no issues.

If you are lucky and come equipped with good camera lenses, you may catch glimpses of wales, penguins and seals in the distant."

Yavnish Jaddoo

"There are lots and lots of stairs, even after taking the Flying Dutchman Funicular. That being said, if you can't do stairs, just taking the funicular will provide great views from the top."
