"Amazing experience, very enthusiastic crew on the boat, they showed all the whales in the ocean 😀 you feel safe, entertained, informed and welcome ... also toilets are very clean, complimentary coffee and cake are delicious. Strongly recommend"

"Whole team were amazing, there was tea, coffee and biscuits available upon arrival for the early morning run. We had a safety briefing before boarding the boat and headed off into Hermanus Bay. We were fortunate to spot whales within 15 mins and viewed 8 x Southern Right Whales in various locations in the bay. The experience meant we saw these magnificient mammals up close for well over an hour before heading back. The crew made the trip exciting, interesting and informative. Thoroughly recommend you take the time to do this particularly if your struggling to see the whales from the shoreline."

The Magic of Southern Right Whales
The whales are named 'Southern Right' because they were considered the 'right' whales to hunt due to their slow-moving nature and tendency to float when killed. Thankfully, they are now protected, and Hermanus offers a sanctuary for them. The sheer size and gentle nature of these whales make for an unforgettable encounter, whether viewed from a boat or the dramatic cliff paths.
Beyond the Southern Rights, Hermanus occasionally hosts other whale species like Bryde's whales and humpback whales, as well as pods of dolphins, adding to the rich marine biodiversity of the area. The conservation efforts in the region are crucial for ensuring these incredible creatures continue to visit these shores year after year.
Shore-Based Whale Watching: A Hermanus Specialty
The cliff path is dotted with numerous vantage points, benches, and whale viewing decks, allowing you to settle in and scan the ocean. The local 'Whale Crier' plays a unique role, using a kelp horn to alert onlookers to the presence and location of whales, guiding people to the best viewing spots. This tradition adds a charming, local flavor to the experience.
While boat tours offer a more immersive experience, the convenience and accessibility of shore-based viewing are undeniable. It's a fantastic way to spend hours observing whale behavior, from spouting and breaching to the gentle surfacing of mothers and calves, all against the backdrop of the stunning South African coastline.
Choosing Your Whale Watching Adventure: Boat Tours
Boat tours typically last between 1.5 to 3 hours, and while sightings are not guaranteed on every trip, the success rate in Hermanus is remarkably high during the season. Many tours provide complimentary refreshments, and the crews are known for their enthusiasm and knowledge, ensuring an engaging experience. Safety briefings are standard before departure.
When selecting a boat tour, consider factors like the size of the boat, the duration of the trip, and the operator's commitment to responsible tourism. Some companies, like Ivanhoe Sea Safaris, have received awards for their excellence in whale watching. Remember to book in advance, especially during peak season, to avoid disappointment.
