What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Johannesburg Art Gallery for its extensive collection and free admission, calling it a 'priceless experience' and a 'hidden gem'. While some note areas could use updates, the art itself is consistently lauded. The gallery is a valuable cultural stop for anyone interested in South African and international art.
"From the outside, the JAG looks like a sandstone dream, like a royal backdrop for tea ceremonies or something like that. But as soon as you roll onto a neglected wasteland that's been declared a car park, the social experiment begins. Whoever runs away first loses. Inside, a feast for fans of pigeon droppings in the room with the sculptures and broken floors. The stucco creaks under decades of neglect, the parquet floor screams for help with every step, and the exhibitions are just a few scraps of fabric without context, a couple of tired paintings; Monet and Picasso have probably quit. The only highlight is the elevator by Bauer from Augsburg - it reliably descends into the abyss of disappointment. At least the employees are friendly and apologetic with looks that say "We know it's bad". It is a beautiful ruin with potential - if they were to blow it up and rebuild it."

"I couldn't help but want more ... it's overall really well kept for a place that's free to enter. I just wish there was more Art."

"The last time i visited this place was 35years ago. The place still looks so great and well taken care of. Revisiting this time was so beautiful and so nostalgic. My heart was full, still is. What a gem🤌🏾"
