What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Sophiatown Heritage Centre for its poignant and informative portrayal of a crucial period in South African history. Many highlight the emotional impact of the exhibits and the value of guided tours in bringing the past to life. Some note that the centre is a place for deep reflection rather than a quick stop.
"Sophiatown Jazz Encounters is hosted at the Heritage Centre on select evenings throughout the year. The building on site that hosts live music performances is an intimate and personal space that provides one with the rare opportunity to be close to the musicians on stage - immersing you in a completely different experience from the other jazz venues that lie across Joburg.
We had the privilege of being a part of the audience for Bheki Khoza's quartet performance last night. Everyone in the venue left with smiles after one of the most stunning and brilliant jazz sets was performed less than 3m in front of us.
The venue allows you to bring your own drinks and snacks, and has a great set-up to accommodate this. They provide glasses and ice, and the tables are beautifully arranged.
Secure parking is available and is guarded."
Jennifer Louie
"Calm and peaceful. It accommodates any weather. Today it was rainy and the event proceeded as planned. No disturbances. Not sure as to how many people the venue can take. The restroom facilities are in good condition. The kitchen facilities are health friendly. Parking is a bit limited, though arrangements can be made."
