What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Paardeberg Battlefield offers a historically significant experience with a museum and trails, but visitor feedback highlights issues with confusing signage, overgrown paths, and unreliable payment systems. While the historical content is praised, the site's management and facilities could be improved to enhance the visitor experience.
"Some of the sinage is confusing and some of the trail heads are overgrown. There was also only 1 person working there that I saw. You're kinda left to find you're own way around.
I also left very little time for the visit. Plan to spend enough time there to do some of the trails. There is a lot to do and its actually quite a good experience."

"A historical site well worth visiting. The museum and grounds are very well maintained and signposted. There is a restaurant but we did not eat there. Toilets were clean. An enjoyable and interesting place to visit!"

"This is a fascinating South African battlefield site, with enough to see to even keep those not interested in battlefields entertained. Unfortunately the site is terribly managed. After driving 10 kilometers on a badly maintained gravel road, the lady at the gate turned us away because we did not have cash. Apparently the card machine was broken, and she would not let us go pass because her "boss was checking on her via the surveillance cameras". So you have electricity to check on your employees, but nothing to help tourists? Bad customer service. After driving back to Modderfontein, to draw money at the world's dirtiest ATM, we were met with contempt at the gate. The lady at the gate did not have change for the R100.00 we just had to drive 20 kilometres to obtain. When we reached the restaurant, we were welcomed with a sign that said they accepted no credit cards. How is it possible for any business to STILL not accept cards or even Snapscan in the year 2022??? The lady at the restaurant was as useless (only more rude) than the one at the gate. We were presented with a little pamphlet and nothing else. No information, no tips as to how to navigate the site - just a cold stare. The site itself is massive, perfect for shorter hikes. However, the signage is terrible and we got lost with our small vehicle on some dodgy roads. There is great potential here, and the history of the highland brigades is genuinely a moving story. However, the disinterested staff make this an unpleasant experience."
